I qualified last month and was assuming that my wages would increase. Having had a meeting with 2 partners I have been informed that I will not see a wage rise until I am registered (which will be in January). Just wondering if this is

Re: QVN wages?

Amy Homer. Obviously just a different practice policy I suppose!

And it was Elaine who said about schedule 3, at the moment I'll just carry on as an SVN. Hopefully will be on the register sooner rather than later! :)

Re: QVN wages?

no I didnt say you couldnt do schedule 3 - but until you are on the register you will be doing sched 3 in the same way as you were as a student. I dont understand the bit where others that have passed the exam at the same time have already had their wage rise - have a chat with your HN see if they can find out a bit more. Maybe its just an oversight and it can all be easily sorted

Re: QVN wages?

Thanks for the replies!

Just a bit unsure where I stand, all the girls who qualified same time as me are now on higher wages so I just assumed I would be the same, although I completely understand why they would want to wait until I was an RVN.

I was unaware as well of me being unable to perform schedule 3 etc! I think the RCVS are quite iffy about the whole limbo period :/

Thanks anyway :)

I think this is the only way you will find out for certain - but I am still on the side of being registered or listed = qualified and I am guessing that is why you havnt had your wage rise yet. You could also try asking your HN and see if they can clarify this for you.

I am not disputing you Ilovethebug - just saying that most employers dont count it as being qualified until all the paperwork is complete and the student is officially qualified, its not just in this job it happens in quite a few others. It is possible for people to pass the exams but then not register for a while until they pay the registration fees and then you get the problem where somebody has qualified but because they haven't registered they are not 'responsible' for what they are doing (ie still on practice insurance as they dont have their own) . I suppose a reasonable comparison would be taking your driving test and passing - but its not until that bit of plastic comes through that says you have a driving licence instead of a provisional driving licence that people actually believe you and you are allowed to drive without somebody riding shotgun

Its only one more month - treat yourself and celebrate when it comes around :-) its not long to wait

Re: QVN wages?

If you completed a degree you are a temporary graduate, which covers you to do the same duties as a qualified nurse and schedule 3 under the supervision of a vs ( confirmed by RCVS) so therefore you are not a student, and shouldnt be getting student wages, you are awaiting your graduation ceremony and have taken and passed all exams.

Re: QVN wages?

As far as believe you are actually in a limbo at this point. You are no longer protected by the rcvs as a student but you are also not protected as a nurse until you are registered. Therefore you are only a lay person during this time and can not take blood samples, monitor GAs etc.

Re: QVN wages?

correct me if I am wrong (and I am sure somebody will) - until you are actually on the list or register you are not officially a qualified nurse. So until you are registered in January you are still not a qualified nurse but a student nurse - and I am guessing this is why you dont get a wage rise until January? January isnt so far away and yes the extra money would probably be very useful coming up to Christmas but dont make yourself all bitter by jumping the gun

The other thing I would say is try not to get too hung up on what others are getting paid, especially if they are doing different jobs - it doesnt do any good, it gets you wound up for no good reason when there is very little you can do about it.

Receptionists often get paid more - not occasionally, but generally in most places I have worked and when you see some of the crap they have to take on the front desk day in day out you can see why. Ok they dont have the training you have - but then they arent doing your job just as you arent doing theirs.

If the practice has funded your training then they have already made a considerable investment in your future and whilst it may seem unfair that those who havent had your training are on a greater hourly wage they may not have been given the opportunities that you have

Yes it is normal to not receive your increase until you are indeed RCVS registered.

Hope this helps
