Our practice is currently changing into a training practice in order for me to be able to go college. CAW are coming to do a check in a couple of weeks. I am trying to find what sort of things they will look for in order to 'pass' us. Is there

Re: Setting up as a TP

This is all good info = CAW usually send a letter to confirm apt and they describe on this what they are looking for. Also worth calling them to ask.

Re: Setting up as a TP

CAW will need to complete a TP approval report to send to the RCVS. This is available on the RCVS website so should hopefully be of some help to you:

http://awardingbody.rcvs.org.uk/document-library/tp-approval-report-form/

Make sure that all practice polices etc are to hand. They may want to look at SOP's for the practice, evidence of maintenance of equipment, COSHH documents, etc.

Make sure that the DD cupboard is being locked appropriately and the key is managed (not left lying around).

They'll want copies of clinical coach certificates.

Make sure you have access to all training documents (as listed in the report in the above link)

I remember there being lots of health and safety, SOPs, fire assessments etc. Can the college you're planning to go to help? We only became an Auxillary TP because there isn't enough caseload but I managed to go to other TPs to use their equipment which we did not have in order to complete my NPL.

Re: Setting up as a TP
Do you have an ultrasound machine?
This isn't usually a requirement in your own practice.

There are some skills which, if you are unable to fulfil them in your own practice, some colleges will allow you to do at a different TP. My nurses used to go to a different local TP to complete their ultrasound, endoscopy and in-house biochemistry/haematology components as our practice was too small to justify us having them.

Your college should have provided you with some idea of what they expect of you. Mostly what will trip you up is paperwork - SOPs, risk assessments etc.

Re: Setting up as a TP

Hello

Be prepared for a lot of protocols and health and safety! A few things they will be looking for are :

health and safety issues are all up to date - do you have a company that does this for you?

protocols on how to use equipment (dental machines, x-ray machines, autoclave etc)

Enough work load/cases for students to take on

Do you have an ultrasound machine?

Who would be your clinical coach? (a vet or a qualified nurse who has completed clinical coach training)

There are more things but this should give you an idea of what they will be looking for - if your practice accredited with the RCVS then you will probably have most of what you need already
