After much discussion & soul-searching we have decided to try chemo. The vets at our practice are currently organising a protocol taking advice from a referral practice, and hopefully we can get started next week.

Thanks again,

I have a particular interest in chemotherapy and we do a few different protocols at our practice.
all our current patients are tolerating their treatments well, I think it's very important to provide the pre emptive treatments such as cerenia to help with the vomiting/nausea, Zantac for the drugs that can upset the stomachs and chlorophenamine for any possible reactions.
if your dog is tolerable of regular blood samples and can sit still I would say try chemo, you may be surprised how well tolerated it is. any infusions we give ie, epirubicin we sedate the patients. some patients will require regular scanning to check heart and liver too.
we use Ian Grant at chemopet as our guidance and he is brilliant for advice and answers any questions we have.

Re: Lymphoma

sorry to read the sad news.

I think as your dog is so young, that you need to have a face to face with someone who specialises in chemotherapy in dogs and discuss the pros and cons. find out what the general response to chemo for lymphoma dogs is and how much time you might buy your dog versus the side affects, as every cancer is different and some are more responsive than others. sorry I cant help as I have never been involved in chemotherapy in animals. Good luck to you and your dog

Re: Lymphoma

Hi, we have a fair few chemo patients in our practice - the majority seem to respond extremely well and I have never known any have any terrible side effects - I have seen a couple of cats with very low white cell counts and bad stomachs but no dogs. I would definitely consider it for my dog if it were ever needed as it isn't that stressful for them at all - one of our current patients is a particularly short tempered westie but it is still not a major ordeal for him or us!

Good luck!

Re: Lymphoma

Hi I think a lot of people worry about putting their dogs through chemo thinking the side effects will be the same as people have. I have nursed many dogs through chemo and the vast majority are absolutely fine with it.

rarely some get nausea or tummy upsets but with drugs like cerenia out there this can be treated. But as I said the vast majority carry on with very few problems.

The only thing you will have to check now is how to go about starting chemo and coming off the steroids as this is very important.

Good luck and hope your dog is OK xxx

Re: Lymphoma

Hi I have nursed a few dogs through chemo. All the owners were sceptical at first but in the end very pleased they did it. The doses of chemo given to animals is low compared to the doses given to people so the side effects, if seen are mild. The aim in dogs isn't to cure like in people but to extend life and not compromise quality. The only side effects I have seen is mild gut upsets which all settled down quickly. I hope this helps.

Re: Lymphoma

Wehave a couple of animals on vincristine, they are eoing really well, we just do haemotology to check wbcthen place and iv and give the does iv and then they can have it removed and go Home xx
