What would you say (or, put another way, what can you prove and defend in a tribunal) if you now received a reference request for this particular member of staff....

The best indication of problems in past jobs is:

- staying in same job a decent length of time - not dozens of different jobs!

- the candidate can give a good (and believable) reason why they have moved jobs.

-they speak well of previous workmates/jobs/employers. This should be the case regardless of their actual feelings. Speaking badly (unprofessionally) of others is never a positive sign!

It is a very difficult situation.... recruitment is so stressful! My advice these days is actually to make sure you get rid of someone pronto. You can usually tell in the first few months if someone just 'isn't right' - and the situation rarely improves with time. At least if you fire them quickly you can simply say they're not right for the job, without giving any other reason.

Re: New Staff Protocol....??

from experience you will be very lucky to get a response from a previous employer other than if they give a reference letter telling you what they want to tell you - which may be very different from what you are actually wanting to know

and this is why

https://www.gov.uk/work-reference

I have known people arrive with glowing references and you think you have landed the greatest catch ever as an employee. From their previous bosses remarks what you have in front of you is worthy of a Nobel prize or a sainthood at the very least - the reality has been that the previous employer has been so glad to offload them they would have written anything to make sure that was what happened.

You could try asking for a CRB check ?

Hi,

I've interviewed at several practices where they ask you to come and work with them for a day or so as part of the interview process. It gives both sides the opportunity to see if they like what they see; I found I relaxed more and they got to see the real me (and vice versa), what I could do, how we related to one another (a shared sense of direction, or not...) and how they worked together as a team (or not!). I am sure you could winkle out most of the truth of abilities declared on a c.v. using this method; I've been tested on all aspects of my C.V. in one form or another when this interview approach was taken...

I don't know if this will help you but I know I felt better informed about a practice and its suitability for me (and vice versa) than by the method of sit and talk interviews I've had...

Good luck with your search.

Ali h

[/quote]

agreed this is a good way for both sides to find out about each other.

when I have used this myself when involved in the recruitment process I have always asked the question in the interview afterwards 'having seen how we work is there anything you would like to change or anything you think we could be doing better?' sometimes it throws up some really good ideas and can help confirm that the person in front of you is the right person for the job and sometimes it helps confirm that the person may have difficulty fitting in with an established routine
