Recently ive had a few terrier puppies in with docked tails, the owners knew nothing regarding certificates etc and the breeder never mentioned it. Ive coming across it more and more and wondered if there is anything we can or should do

Re: Docked puppies - no papers!?

[quote user="Mrs Dot Dot"]

I've seen 2 rottie pups (Different ages) in the last 6 months with docked tails... both owners said that they didn't know that it was illegal, and both knew nothing about certificates and that the emphasis was on them..... What can you do? The thing is , if nothing is done then they will begin to creep in more and more.

our clinic was asked the other day if we could dock an 8 week old rottie pup...

Re: Docked puppies - no papers!?

I wrote an essay at uni about the law surrounding dew claw removal and anyone can do it aslong as they are over 16 and the pups eyes are still closed. We have a bermese mountain dog breeder who brings her pups in to have their hind dew claws off and I refuse to be involved with it. They make a hell of a racket and they bleed loads aswell. I personally think the owner should be made to hold the puppies as it's done! I'm sure that would soon put them off!

Re: Docked puppies - no papers!?

I've seen adverts in the coutry Life & otehr magazines for Patterdales & other breeds saying good pets, legally docked ..........

I also know of a least one Patterdale breeder who has got themselves a shotgun license so they can have their dogs docked as working.

Hiya,

afraid it is alive and kicking here in the republic, the ISPCA have been fighting it but with this government its like banging your head against a brick wall, although to be fair a lot of vets i have come across refuse to dock tails, there will ALWAYS be some shithead of a vet out there always ready to make a quick buck. then there are those who argue that if it is not done by a vet, ppl will ahve no problem getting "a friend" to do it.....

whenever i answer the phone i admit i can be very short with ppl who ask for it to be done - i ask them would they like their child thumb chopped off???? i think if anybody actually witnessed the procedure they would never dream of even thinking getting puppies tails docked.

GGGRRRRRRR

when i worked in london i did come across a lot of dogs that had been rescued in ireland and rehomed in the UK, although never any puppies.

Re: Docked puppies - no papers!?

[quote user="STRVN"]

Whilst I don't agree with it & always make sure I am out of earshot of the screaming pups, I certainly prefer that the vet does it & not the breeder with a rusty pair of kitchen scissors. Many years ago, we euthanased a little dobermann pup that had the most horrendous infection that had travelled up its spine, due to the breeder docking it too closely & not taking care with sterility. Incidently, most pups are not chipped at the time of docking, because people think it is cruel to chip something so small!!!

Re: Docked puppies - no papers!?

I've seen it done with anaesthesia/analgesia, also at least the instruments are sterile and performed in a clean environment.
Personally, if someone wants a tail docked and is adamant on acheiving this somehow, I would prefer that a vet does it - at least that way, it will be done properly and with anaesthetic/pain relief etc with no adverse effects to the dog.

Now, before anyone gets cross at me saying this, it doesnt mean I am happy that it is being done - I am just stating why it needs to be done properly.
