I think Fi has a valid point,very easy to think all practices are the same.

There are many aspects of the job I love and for me it was a big decision to leave but it was something I had to do for my own wellbeing.

If there had been a V.N job going near where I live I would have applied for it but alas there werent any. So for now Im off to do something else but I would like to think in the future I would go back to vet nursing. Who knows!

Yes to quote one vet who is looking for a QVN " we are as rare as hens teeth". I locum too and its not the money, its that I chose when and where I work and have more control over my working life. also not willing to put up with bad hours being made to feel personally responsible for someones business, emotional black mail to stay late, cover sick blah blah blah. and if I dont like working somewhere I dont have to go back. I know lots of older nurses who are leaving or have left as they are fed up with the poor pay and conditions.

I'm a R.A.N.A. ! I used to be very pround of that qualification - It represents many years experience dealing with many "Older Vets". Is great how far we have come in the 20+yrs I have been in practice.

Yes, they do! I find this more with 'older' vets though Though not all older vets. Personally, from working in small animal only practice and mixed practice, I found that nurses were much better treated and respected in small animal practice.

This may not be the view of everyone, but certainly one I have experienced.

Unfortunateluy Heather some vets still refer to us as lay staff and treat you like a skivvy, or and this is a quote " a glorified receptionist"

I know what you all mean about the pay though, it is totally crap. It makes me so angry when I hear the measly wage nurses get paid for the hard work they do. I know of quite a few nurses - both SVN & QVN who have left to do human nursing.

I didn't mean they work effectively - I'd agree they could certainly learn lesons from us. And a 'caring' profession....hmmmmmmmm... I just mean that it must be hard work. Ill people are generally not very nice - plus all the politics, rotas, red tape... gives me nightmares just thinking about it!
