I think it is really important to have a lot of experience behind you first.. Also to keep up to date with everything, my students appreciate that i am still in practice unlike others on the team that haven't been in practice for years but are excellent tutors in certain subjects such as anat and phys . It is extremely hard work being a lecturer and you are forever preparing lessons and researching around the subject. If you wanted to do this why not contact the college and ask them to sit in on a lesson or maybe take a lesson to see if its for you. Good luck though Hun xx

Worked in a busy clinical practice for a number of years before going into teaching and still return during academic holidays and the odd weekend. I enjoy my time back in practice and find that it helps me stay up to date with what is going on in day to day practice, new drugs etc. You definately need to have worked in clinical practice to teach. Not only does it give you valuable experiences you can relate to whilst teaching but also it helps to have 'done' what you are teaching before in order to have a full understanding of what you are teaching as well as giving you credability with your students.

The offers were to work as only nurse in a hospital branch practice, or to work in a general practice and do my clinical coaching in a couple of months which ive chosen to do. I agree you

need to be in touch with modern practice when teaching and have good experience so you can relate to the students.

Re: Any lecturers on here?
very few colleges will hire a lecturer with no clinical experience, because the course itself involves a lot of work with clinical practice; remember that vet nursing is not a classroom-only course! :)
sadly there are a number of colleges that have - and veterinary nursing in general is now paying for it. I can name at least two places where nurses became tutors within a few months of qualifying. Sometimes you can even tell which students have come from which college and who has taught them because they get the same things consistently wrong ( at least it says the teaching is consistent ) but woe betide you if you ever try and correct them or their tutor.

we had an example of this on here only this week

http://www.vetnurse.co.uk/forums/p/22756/146074.aspx#146074

that pot of a 1000 pred 5's sitting on the shelf - you will have to be going some to get them out in 28 days!

worrying isnt it

I would like to see that a requirement of being a lecturer is that there should be at least 2 years post qualification worked in practice and that lecturers have worked for some time in a minimum number of 3 practices so that they get a feel for how different practices work and can build this experience into how they train the next generation

Without clinical experience you'll lack understanding when one of your students has a problem in practice. To be quite honest, some of the absolute rubbish I've heard some students tell me they are being taught in college makes me think most lecturers haven't had practice experience anyway! If you know how things tend to go in the Real world, and how students will be **gasp** USING A BOTTLE OF INJECTABLE DRUG THAT HAS BEEN OPEN FOR MORE THAN 28 DAYS!!! then you can at least teach the syllabus with a bit of empathy.... nothing worse than holier-than-thou lecturers who are totally out of touch.

I'm sure you've had some clinical experience given that you're qualified, but it's good to get some time as a QVN under your belt, as you're more accountable for your actions and decisions. That responsibility will give you a different perspective.
