at least your student has finished - ours havn't , both into extension time as far as I know and I have pretty much given up. I do think its a good course if people are well motivated and have definite deadlines, if they dont its a struggle, I suppose this is the advantage of college attendance.

Must admit our girl has just finished the caw vca course neither of us were that impressed with it. And very glad to see it finished lol

Thanx Sal, yes the college based course covers a lot of the syllabus, so is it up to the mentors to do this job? I thought I would have been emailed with mentors responsibilities. Looking through the syllabus it looks like a lot of work to do in 1 year!! I am a clinical coach aswell so god knows where I am going to find the time to fit all this in x

yes there is good bit more involved than just signing tasks off. But hopefully with the classroom based course a lot of this would be done by the college? I have spent a lot of time with our two students

Speaking with a CAW hat on for a moment, I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but the course can't be done without a work placement due to the 600 hours of practical work needed. So it's not an issue of 'won't enroll you' it's an issue of 'we can't', I'm afraid! (Apologies if that's splitting hairs, a little!)

This is the problem I have. I applied to CAW to do the VCA, but my placement fell through and they wouldn't continue with my application without a placement. I guess you could try that. I then went to an online college [SJS Training] and am currently just started on the ANA Award, which is 12 credits of theory only, ie: all knowledge based assessments. At the moment I am trying to find a clinical placement, either voluntary or paid, so that I can continue onto the certificate. I already have my passes in Maths and English, so this is the only thing preventing me from entering into VN training. Last year I even put myself through a level 3 vet support course, which was theory only. I did it to see if I could handle the academic work, see if I was interested enough in vet nursing [I'm already a trained human nurse] and in the hope that it would mean I wouldn't be 'wet behind the ears' when applying to a practice. I passed this in August with a distinction pass, but so far no luck with the ana placement.

Hopefully I am going to get some work in a cattery which is quite some distance away, but at least I can be assessed on the animal accommodation and food/drink units. That should make me more attractive to a practice, as once I've looked at their protocols, I can be left to my own devices.

I'm in Ealing in West London, so if anyone out there could do with a pair of hands, I'd love to hear from you. Currently work a split shift each weekday in childcare, but can manage weekends and most Thursdays.

Thanks Sal that's amazing.

No George, they are free to the practice. A mixed animal practice would be great. The course is predominantly geared towards small animal but some large animal would be great too.

Is Lichfield near Birmingham? If so then it would be too far I'm afraid but thanks anyway

does it have to be small animal placements? and do the practice pay them for the days they do or is it just work experience placement? would lichfield be to far out for your students?

No, not much paperwork at all.

We have to visit them once or twice, and they have to have a time sheet signed to show that they have completed the hours but that's it.

CAW doesn't require a VCA placement to be a TP; certainly there are practical aspects that need to be done on the course that a mentor has to supervise, but they're not required to be a clinical coach or anything.

I know a good few practices in that area so will pass this along. There must be some reason why practices are not taking this up? is there a lot of paperwork or a lot of 'conditions' they have to meet?
