I stopped using hep flush way back (2000 I think) it was mentioned a couple of times at BSAVA congress that year. TBH was never that happy about adding hep to bags of saline to be used as flush anyway as the bags sat around way too long and even with the cleanest of techniques I was never sure what they might be growing. There was always the potential even with clearly marked bags for somebody to come along and use it for something they shouldnt

We make our own we put 1.25ml of Heparin 1,000 IU/ml into 100ml of water for injection.

I didn't know that about normal saline though, thanks for the tip.

Latest research shows that saline is just as effective for flushing catheters as hep saline. .

We put 1.26mls heparin into a 100ml bag of saline if that`s any help..

Hi Sarah, I can't remember the ratios or volumes off hand but it is in the BSAVA formulary, it's where I always check.
