We would like to start taking some on in my practice but would like them to get as much out of it as possible. I feel bad when they are just left by themselves as there is nothing specific set

Re: Work Experience Students

Basically all they had to found out was what was involved in the op and why it was done was all that was asked :) mostly. Most seemed to enjoy it and it weeded out those who weren't really interested as when it was time to see the op they couldn't tell vet anything as they'd been on FB and texting on phones etc. I filled in a few ( parasites and immunisation) and kept them in my note book. I might even refer back to them now I,m a student.

Re: Work Experience Students
If they were watching a op say a spay of a dog they'd be asked to research it first and explain to the vet what was going to happen during Op that way the student had a basic understanding of the procedure being carried out. - that's ok if you have a share computer in the practice.
This would have scared the hell out of me as a work experience student! Great way of getting them to be involved though.

Re: Work Experience Students

one of the surgeries I did work experience in had worksheets on different subjects for school students depending on what they were doing that day.

for example if they were in consultations with the vet - they'd be given a worksheet to find out about the diseases dogs and cats are vaccinated against. There were others on different parasites and what to do if an animal gets them etc.

We had a lot of school-age w/exp students at my practice, before last. It was hard to keep an eye on them when we were busy and devilishly difficult to keep them occupied when we weren't! So.....

Obviously they were very limited in what we could ask them to do.So I devised a booklet for them to complete and hand in at the end of their stint (however long that was for - a day or a week....longer in some cases if they were keen and well behaved!).

It involved finding out about the practice itself...when it was set up, who owned it, what sorts of animals we treated, what our opening hours were etc etc...also basic questions about the correct way to clean a kennel / mop the floor (what disinfectants we use / dilution rates and methodology), give examples of PPE (some of them got well into it and did a right old project on this one. (I remember being advised it was good idea to wear a 'hard hat' to protect my head against 'bangs off the kennel' ...bless!), finding out what acertain 'veterinary words' mean e.g. sceptic, antiseptic and disinfection mean... get them to select a dog/cat/rabbit/horse/cow... breed and write a brief description about it. I compiled a 'fill in the missing' word / letter quiz. Asked them to write about about their 'dream' job., (yes, that was interesting...ha ha!). Basically anything I thought might a) be relevant to our job, b) keep them occupied and c) give them something they could take home/back to school as a little portfolio of work. Access to a computer with the internet and a printer helped as they could cut and paste and research stuff. Access to staff members willing to give just a couple of minutes attention when asked a question was essential and it meant the students were able to interact with staff in a positive way. Obviously ground rules were laid down to avoid conflict.

I am afraid I don't have copies of anything as I left the practice some 2 years ago, but I hope this might spark some creative thoughts for you?

Regards.

We now only take vet students and A-level students that are definately going onto a vet/vet nursing career. I'm afraid that even with interviewing them we had so many poor ones we decided to stop.
