Going to work in a cafe. I honestly at this point dont know if I will return to vet nursing. Would you guys still remain on the RCVS register? How would you advise me

Re: Life after vet nursing.

If you qualified after 2003 you have to be an r from 2010 all of use are forced to become r (registered) and subject to all the vets rules re disciplinary and have compulsory cpd 15hrs recoded a year or 45 over 3 years but l think 5hrs/year can be self cert (reading etc)

http://www.amtra.org.uk/ is the people who do the sqp, as a vn you only need to do a conversion exam for companion but not sure on the equine and others.
Anyone can do sqp they need to do a longer exam though if not a vn.
From what l understand you can apply to do set farm animals ie if you only deal with sheep apply for that but contact them and ask, l may be wrong.

http://www.vetnurse.co.uk/forums/t/2111.aspx
The OTC people are arranging day cpd courses and will let us know when it is done. Have to get a set number of points/year but as still in set up stage we have till l think it is 2011 to do the first lot.
SQP points only given on approved AMTRA CPD and AMTRA must be prior notified you are going or they will not backdate or credit you (bloody stupid but ho hum)

I did it as l was told the exam was changing to a full day for everyone as opposed to an afternoon conversion for VN but it hasn't so far.

Was told that it was going to be a major push for vet nurses, again nothing so far.Once you have it you can order drugs within your SQP remit direct from the wholesaler which may be handy as a farmer? Mainly wormer's for small animals not sure re farmers possibly a bigger range. I felt it left me options open if l wanted to order wormer's or flea treatments.

Re: Life after vet nursing.

[quote user="Caro Laithwaite"]

I would keep going. Do the odd day of locum nursing so that you can stay current as do not forgdt the rules change next year and even thouse of us that do not want to will be dragged kicking and screaming to the r letter. And keep up your cpd as well.

It is always a handy string to your bow. Do you not get the vet times and vn times both are free to qvn and worth getting. There is some free and online cpd about as well vetmedteam and the sqp magazine both are online. Then lots of online courses. Plus organised cpd in your area l am sure.

Could look at getting your SQP for sheep as well that may come in handy and if wanted your other half could also get it. You can get it for all animals if you wanted but it get's costly.

Thanks Caro,

Im going to sound ignorant so I appologise in advance!

Here goes- what exactly is changing rules wise next year?! ( Just shows you how my interest in vet nursing had dwindled in the last year :()

Where do I find out about the SQP?
