I have recently decided to take on the challenge of adding an extra clinic into our service mainly due to poor recognition of feline geriatric conditions - i.e. poorly recognised OA. I was wondering if anyone is currently running feline

Re: Feline geriatric clinic help

I am running a BVNA regional CPD event on how to set up and run senior/geriatric clinics on October 22nd
So sorry - I really feel cheeky asking!!

Thank you so much for all your interest! I am pleased about how much interest there is out there in the development in the area. Therefore....! I have decided now, to look into this and put into practice these clinics for my DipAVN research project - So I will keep you posted with things I come across etc that I feel may be helpful to all. Could I ask that you keep your eyes and ears peeled as obviously, being in one practice that has a slightly varied relationship with drug companies I only get to hear or speak to certain companies. Thank you for your suggestions - I will get on the phone tomorrow and get the ball rolling.

I will keep this thread as active as I can to keep you up to date :-)

Thanks again, Caroline xx

Re: Feline geriatric clinic help

There is so much that can be done with senior clinics!

I think that there is the 'generic' geriatric check-ups, so looking at weight, diet, teeth, coat condition (mats), nail clips etc, but I also think there's a LOT of scope for nurses to run clinics in more specific medical areas, such as diabetes, renal disease, hypertensive cats, hyperthyroid cats etc. We discussed this area a lot in a recent run of a course that ONCORE do on this topic.

Whilst of course we can't step outside of our remit, there is still lots and lots we can do to help these clients monitor and care for their cats, inbetween the vet check-ups. Use of handouts, and leaflets personalised to the patient also help, (so fill in weight, any issue noted, any recommendations etc) as they give the client something to take away with them.

I think it is all too often that cats get brought in that were diagnosed with, eg renal insufficiency, and there has been no follow up, and the cat is now presented 10% dehydrated for palliative drip or euthanasia. Nurses can do a lot to try and step in, providing preventative advice and care to try and encourage better compliance.

Really good to see that many of you are also keen to work on this area!

We have a lot of success with it and the nurse running it will get 2-3 appointments a week

Re: Feline geriatric clinic help

I'm really interested in this area too so will be keeping my eye on this thread! I think older cats are often neglected due to lack of education but once you mention the potential probs to owners they often are really surprised and are quite often willing to do lots for their cat.

I'd love to start these clinics, I think having the vets(or even just one who loves old mogs!) and receptionists on board really helps as they can direct clients towards you.
