The head nurse and I (deputy) have just begun to formulate the Christmas rota and although we have put something in place for this

Re: Christmas Rotas!

When I worked in Dover, the rule was the newest member of staff vet got it. It was a bit funny for me really. Prior to this I had worked in a Muslim country with no legal obligation for non-muslim religious holidays, but my boss there was quite keen to make sure everyone on staff got their religion's day off. It was important to him and I appreciated the gesture. So after 3 years of having Christmas day off in Saudi, my first Christmas in UK...you guessed it, I pulled the Christmas shift!

Re: Christmas Rotas!

Names in hat! Only way to do things. Been trying to get that in my practice for ages now but the Christmas rota is usually done by the head nurse asking the first nurse she sees what she wants to do that year. So by the time she gets to the last nurse, the only shift left is Christmas day. Not the way to do things in my opinion.

Re: Christmas Rotas!

Hey there,

You two sound lovely bosses!! Here's what I'd suggest... for this year, everyone's name gets put into a hat and then two names are taken out. The first draw is the person doing your Christmas 12 hour stint and the second person is their 'back-up' in case of illness etc. Then formulate a rota for future Christmas/New Year by starting with the rest of the names lucky enough to have this year off. Everyone takes their turn.

This is what worked for me and my colleagues. It was simple, fair and uncomplicated. If we wanted to swap amongst ourselves we could do so after seeking 'Head Honcho' approval.

Hope it helps!
