I have been hunting for a new job for a while now, can't seem to find anything in my local area.
I have tried the usual publications and websites. My partner is keen for me to try being a locum but the idea scares me!
Anyone got any helpful

Re: Finding a new job

Most of the places near me seem to have had the same staff for years. Obviously means they are more likely to be nice places to work but doesn't help people looking for jobs!

I am definitely going to try CV dropping

Re: Finding a new job

I have found most of my jobs through word of mouth or me sending my CV to a practice and telling them that I want to work for them and why they should hire me! I think many jobs are filled without an advert being placed so I would recommend contacting the practices that you would like to work in and ask them to keep your details on file in case a position comes up. Good luck with your search

Re: Finding a new job

Thank you very much for your advise. I think locuming maybe my route to take until I find a permanent position. As you say it means I can find a practice I know and like during my travels.

I know I am letting my head rule- I am one of those people who likes everything organised and not being able to find work week to week worries me!

Re: Finding a new job

I would cv / letter drop in person, practices in the area you are keen or available to work, sometimes practices will use current cv's on file before advertising.

Locuming is a great experience, I found I learnt heaps of stuff - new ideas techniques to take into other jobs, learnt what was important to me as a nurse and the types of practice I was happy working in. If you are able to locum in the area you want to work then you can suss out the practices before working there permanently!! Practices were happy to use me, as not going through an agency they have no extra fees to pay!! Get references from the practices you work at to build up a portfolio - to help sell yourself.

I always had a little book in my pocket and made notes of practices procedures / protocols, what to do etc - my little bible!! Had nursing info in as well for quick reference if I forgot stuff or wasn't sure.

I'm a pretty shy person and don't really like being out of my comfort zone, but was fine, going in to see practice before I worked there, got to meet the staff and find toilet - could just blend into the back ground and see how things ticked etc so my 1st day at work wasn't so bad!! Staff were always really friendly and helpful and if you don't like somewhere you don't have to go back!!

The only down side was I missed not knowing who the patients / clients were, found some clients would prefer to deal with permanent staff, just because they didn't know you - which I understand, I found a smile, pat or stroke and friendly attitude won most round pretty quickly!! You also don't have little jobs to do in down time etc, so as long as you're pro active and don't mind keeping yourself cleaning etc you'll be sweet.

Good luck
