Once a dog has met its target weight how do i work out maintenance calories?

step 1) % overweight = (start weight - target weight) divided by target weight x 100

step 2) time until target weight achieved in weeks = (start weight - target weight) divided by (start weight x 0.01)

step 3) expected weight loss per week in grams = (start weight - target weight) divided by time until target weight achieved in weeks x 1000

Anything in brackets you need to work out first before the rest of the calculation, does that make sense?

So dogs start weight is 39.45kg
The dog target weight is 30kg
The difference between the start weight and the target weight is 9.45kgs

step 1 = (39.45 - 30) divided by 30 x 100 = 31.5% overweight

step 2 = (39.45 - 30) divided by (39.45 x 0.01) = 23.95 weeks until the target weight is achieved ( or could round upto 24 weeks)

step 3 = (39.45 - 30) divided by 23.95 x 1000 = 394.5 grams is expected to be lost per week.

Hi jenny, that would be fab - The dogs current weight is 39.45kg, ideally want him at 30kg. Charlotte

Hello, what is the dogs current body weight? And what is the target body weight that you want the dog to be? and I can write it out and work through it with you. The calculations came from a hills leaflet with info on RD and Metabolic diets .

Hi Jenny,

where are these calculations from? do you have any more info on them - just wondered as a little bit puzzled when just tried to see how they worked on a lab in our practice that is overweight and the results using them seemed a little odd, could just be me having a moment!

If u use hills food they have a weight calculator with all the above calculated automatically expect the no. Of calories.
