the lady basicly rang to ask if a puppy she considered purchasing would be ugly. The exact breeding I cant remember but I think it was pug x shih tzu no doubt with a fancy " flog it for 100's of pounds more name" I explained that a) no cross breed can be determined to look a certain way when that young. In fact no breed of dog at all, I have at least 2 that look completley diferent from puppy version! and b) the main reason for acquiring a dog should not be through looks alone.

the lady mainly laughed and ended up coming in 5 days later with said pup for 1st vacc. She's doing all the right things but i did over hear her once again question the dogs adult looks with the vet. :D

Re: Why do we do it!?

yeah, am with you guys on all of these - i have too many stories to count now, but many a time have wished i did not pick up the phone, the only time i remember getting really irate with a client was when the make owner rang me at 2am as his malamute had had puppies 4 hours earlier and they couldn't make them feed from her as she kept walking off, so he wanted to bring all the puppies down to get rid of them! Didn't want to try just wanted that puppies gone, when i suggested how to encourage the mum and pups he just started screaming and swearing at me, to which i'm not proud to admit but i raised my voice back, and suggested that perhaps he should rehome all of his animals to someone who actually cares and knows what there doing and perhaps he should think about neutering - i hung up that call!

There are times i do wonder why do we do this! But the good clients really make up for the few bad ones

Re: Why do we do it!?

My all time favourite was the saturday evening phone call just as surgery was closing, older lady very distressed was looking after her sons cat "the cat has just come in from the garden and it has got a tumour on its side which has burst, there is yellow stuff coming out of it and its all slimey. my sons gonna be so upset ......" adv bring straight over. on arrival vet sees straight away, within 30seconds lady scurries out with cat basket, thankyou very much, very red and drives off quickly.

It turns out it started when the owner had to remove several 'ticks' from the dogs belly one day, yup the guy had pulled off the dogs nipples! The dog only went for him after he had taken several off- what a good dog!

I had an actual argument with the guy about male mammals having nipples too, which only ended when I got him to lift up his tee-shirt.....

Re: Why do we do it!?

That sounds like the all too frequent 'lumps' that turn out to be either nipples or testicles (the lumps that aren't always there....) that usually makes a client blush a little :)

Re: Why do we do it!?

I recently had a client rush her cat in as it was "really poorly and covered in diarrhoea". All part of lifes rich tapestry and all that jazz!

Not phone call related but here are two of my faves....

Client: I though hamsters were nocturnal he said rather snottily and showing off using a big word.

Me: yes, they are sir but this is a gerbil...

(Not same client but was in the same week...)

Client: I want to have my hamster Peppa put to sleep coz she has cancer coming out of her bottom.

Me, full of sympathy and care for the poor little thing, takes a quick peek inside the shoe box...

Me: Pointing to the hamsters testicles... is that the area you are worried about? (Client nods). I will get your pet checked out by our vet but Peppa is a boy not a girl and this is normal for a male hamster.

Client: Eh? No. You are wrong. She is a girl. That's what the lady in the pet shop told me. She sells lots of hamsters so she should know.

Me: Trying to be as kind and sensitive as I can.... Well, those are his testicles. He is a boy hamster. They look completely normal to me. I will still get a vet check him out for you. Is that okay?

Client: Er, testicles? Really? They're enormous. They will upset my little girl so I still want Peppa put to sleep please.

?????????!!!!!!????? you try to figure some people out, but you never do......!

Ali h

Got an irate call disgusted that we didnt recognise his dog ( no chip no tag) and how dare we sent it to the dog warden as she had to pay £25 (lucky it was only that!)

Had to laugh this afternoon when they sent their daughter in..... Dog had escaped again! So wish it was brought it as we would send it to th dog warden again!

Re: Why do we do it!?

We used to get that a lot too, unfortunately our number was similar to the dvla, and the amount of people who still continued to ask for what they wanted from the dvla, even after answering the phone as a veterinary practice... Makes you wonder how they get through life! :)

Re: Why do we do it!?

I had a new client call today to register, after answering the phone with the name of our practice - which has the word VETERINARY in the name of the clinic, and after taking all of his details down I asked for the name of his pet, to which he said he doesnt have any pets and am I asking this due to needing a password for security reasons?? I decided to ask if he meant to register at a Vets or was he looking for a doctors.... then the line went dead. FAIL.

Sometimes I wonder if only a select few were born with a brain.

Re: Why do we do it!?

I had a client call me to ask me why another vet was charging £800 for pyo surgery and why were thier consutation fees so high and wasnt tis so bad?!! i explained that not all vets are the same blah blah blah and thei price is what we charge, offere him a quoe with us only to find out that it was not his dog at all but his friends dog and he was just ineterested in what the pyo surgery ment, advised if his friend had an issue with charges then he needed to bring it up wih the other practice. he then decided to call back 2 days later and ask for me by name.. he then proceded to tell me that it was not a pyo but food poisining.. i didnt know what to think not that I didnt care but why was he calling tell me about a dog that was not his and that I had never seen or ever would see....

I have also had a client call in the past and ask what kind of a cat should he buy? i hung up that call after 25mins.... (probs a hoax any way)

so dont worry some clients are nuts and a bit thick so long as they mean well you will help them as best you can as that what RVN really means lol
