I was told i'd have a certain type of visa i think they do like a tier system and it shouldn't be difficult to get it. Even my father has been able to already obtain a visa and he doesn't have a degree only a formal aircraft qualification. I guess it depends who you ask for the information, but when i enquired i was told it shouldn't be a problem.

Anyway i didn't post on here to argue with another member, just to pass on what i'd already been told when i'd tried to find information for myself.

Re: California

Unfortunately Teri-Ann I have to disagree with the visa thing- it's true in most other countries but in the US you have to be sponsored and it costs quite a bit for an employer to sponsor, as far as I am aware, so they are unlikely to sponsor a foreigner when they can hire an American for free. A degree may help you get into tech school, but it's unlikely to get you a visa. The US is one of the toughest countries to get a visa for- the policy keeps out a lot of well qualified people.

Re: California

I'm looking to move to Texas to become a vet tech at some point. From what i've gathered if you have the degree you have a really good chance of getting a work visa as any degree is highly regarded. Everywhere is different but i know each state has their own exams they like you to pass. I've emailed someone from the Texas vet tech exam place to see if they can help and point in the right direction, it might help to email the california one :)

Re: California

Check out the California Vet tech association page and the Califorinia VMA page. It can be pretty tough to get work permits etc, unless you're lucky enough to have residency status/citizenship. I looked into moving to a different part of the US a few years ago and my credentials wouldn't transfer to the state I wanted to go to. You'd have to sit the NAVTE (check that website too) which allows you to work in north America. Sadly not everyone can sit it- I know the state where I wanted to go required graduation from an AVMA accredited program, but as something else came up here for me, I stopped investigating. Each state varies though, and some states don't require licences at all, so check it out!
