I'm a nearly qualified veterinary nurse from the Bedfordshire area who is desperate to work with wild animals in the future. My main interest would to try and contribute to helping endangered animals but to get into this niche field the catch 22

Re: Help with Working with Wild Animals Please!

i was fortunate to work in a veterinary practice that is linked with a wildlife sanctuary. The best advice you can be given is to either pay for a zoo experience day at local zoo or volunteer at you local wildlife sanctuary this is a link to close sanctuary to you i would suggest you get in contact with them as you are keen to look into wildlife you will be valued highly in the wildlife communite.

London Zoo run a work experience for veterinary nurses every year unfortunately entries have closed for this year, but entries open again in january. the work experience is for 2 weeks but that would help you get some experience nursing and working with wild animals.

hope that helps

Re: Help with Working with Wild Animals Please!

Go immediately to our Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Athens, Greece!

We always have a need for volunteers, the vol fee is very low (a couple hundred euro for as long as you want to stay) and the flights can be cheap if you book early or outside the holiday season.

The work is basic and the vols are not veterinary qualified but they are doing IM injections, SQ fluids, tube feeding (placing the tube through the mouth rather than indwelling) and wound care. I've spent many years there and am passionate about the place - received a text this morning to let me know that one of our longtime residents, a turtle called Marina whom we've had for 5 years, was released off Crete this morning . Very rewarding indeed!

What about volunteering with someone like Animals Asia? Animals Asia do such great work and you can volunteer in China with the bears. And they employ VNs so you could always keep an eye out for a job vacancy too.

Or Lilongwe widlife in Malawi - ah theres so many good places. We have a list of volunteer links on our website as I think volunteering is brilliant.

Or if thats too far, what about Looe Monkey sanctuary in Cornwall, I think they might take Volunteers and also do great work.

Volunteering can be ideal for a time to get experience while your looking for jobs with wild animals? And much fun too!
