Does anyone know whether it's acceptable to fold the inner bag to fit inside the outer one, or will there be a range of sizes in order for me to select

Re: Double autoclave bagging

I removed the needle from the syringe by holding the syringe vertically over the sharps bin and removing the needle by the hub by holding it between my finger and thumb and twisting the syringe away, then dropped the needle through the hole in the sharps bin, therefore sepsis was maintained, and I passed the task.

Re: Double autoclave bagging

They will give you adequate sizing bags so you don't have to fold the bags inside to fit. Go for the smallest bags each time.

Flick the needle off using the sharps or resheath using a polystyrene block never with forceps as this is deemed unsafe.

Re: Double autoclave bagging

Probably too late now... but for changing needles in an aseptic manner we were told to safely re-sheath them ie. cap on table, scoop up with needle, click on with your fingers once needle is securely covered by cap. You then remove it by hand and put it in sharps - using the sharps bin to remove the needle breaks asepsis. Or so we were told...

Re: Double autoclave bagging

I agree Julie, which is why I questioned it.

But if that's the way they want it dome, that's how I'm going to do it (for the exam)!

Re: Double autoclave bagging

I don't see how removing a needle using the sharps bin can possibly keep the tip of the syringe sterile to then change for another needle. I know that's how it's supposed to be done and you're not "allowed" to remove the needle any other way but I don't see how that can keep the syringe sterile.

Re: Double autoclave bagging

In our mocks we had a range of sizes and I guess it'll be the same for the actual OSCE so just pick two that fit together nicely.

We were taught to use the sharps bin to remove the needle then aseptically change to the new one. This is what I'll be doing for mine.
