Anyone else out there quit nursing to earn enough money to live? What did you do?
I am constantly struggling from one month to the next, and just can't see how I can keep nursing. I do love my job and would be sad to leave, and hope that

Re: What have you done?

Thanks for all the replies. I think maybe nights or locum work could be the way forward. I can't travel though for locum work, well not far anyway, have a flat with my boyfriend and have lots of furries to care for, so pretty settled in that way.

My only concern is the amount the practice I work at now would expect me to pay back for training etc but I guess I would end up better off in the long run.

Its sad cause I don't really want to leave where I am now. It has its moments where a brick wall against which to bang my head would be good, but in general its pretty god compared to some places I've worked.

I think I would enjoy nights. Not sure my boyfriend will so much but he said he's willing to give it a go.

I don't get paid sick now either so that wouldn't change if I opted for locum work. Just need to earn enough for monthly bills and I will be sorted.

I'll let you know what happens! Thanks for the advice.

Re: What have you done?

locums on average do get paid better than normal nurses....however you dont get the paid sick time or holidays so you have to weigh up if locumming will work for you (also have to usually be prepared to travel a lot!)

Re: What have you done?

I've also heard that locums get paid much better than permanent nurses.
I left vet nursing cus of the wages last year and went into lecturing...Money was great but the job wasn't. I have recently returned to vet nursing on a respectable wage (and doing what I love the best). Have you had a hunt around to see if you could find a well paid VN job ??, referral centres pay well as do the charities (PDSA are very acceptable) ?? alternatively what about night work - great pay and day times etc free, with more time off you could add a little locuming in too ??? (or just become a locum again the moneys good).

Good luck;-)

Really not sure what to do. There is just no way I could take on another job, am exhausted as it is, I have no idea how people do it! I am qualified but not really found that helps, all the jobs that pay better seem to want more experience and I have only recently passed. Would love to lecture but not been qualified long enough to even be an assessor yet!

I really love my nursing, just wish I could find a way to make it pay too.

Re: What have you done?

Hi

I should image you are proberly not a mum! Do you have any friends with children? When I had to give up working to look after my young ones, I discovered there is a closely kept secret amongst mums regarding market research. It means visiting a house or office and getting involved in discussion about a product. It paid quite well and was cash in hand. Ask around your area, there are often a few on the go at any one time.

There are also a few online, but they usually only pay in points which get converted into a Amazon voucher.

Good Luck

Re: What have you done?

Hi Toad

Sorry to hear about your predicament. Have you qualified? If so, more doors would (hopefully) be open for you. If not, are you able to stay on til you've done your final exams? Some of the charities often employ VNs in various roles, the pay isn't always great but depending where you live, may be a better option to afford to live on.

Otherwise would another job on top of nursing be a possibility? I have great respect for any nurse who works their normal shift and then does another job on top, can't be easy but is often a solution (bar work, odd locum shift here and there-there's another thread going about extra work).

Hope you find something suitable.

Re: What have you done?

Have you looked into management?
