blind. Than risk my eyes. with glasses your eyes can improve mine have.
Mind you l would probably do better if l went yearly for check ups
instead of when l can afford it. However the point is it isn't like it
is make up for me me eyes are to important to put at risk just because
l do not like glasses or contact lenses.

And quite honestly bad to me is when you have a 15 or less 15 you are considered visually impaired (politcal speak for blind)

Re: laser eye surgery?

Im pleased your surgery has worked out, but in my opinion its a massive risk to take, what IF it goes wrong? could you cope with your sight detereorating?

hi sarah, so are your eyes fine now? no problems while driving at night? was your perscription for your eyes steady? or had it been getting worse when you decided to have it done? as my eyes have deterierated over the past 4 years to my current percscription so im worried if i get it done theyll just keep getting worse once time passes

thanks

Hi Sarah! Yeah my eyes are totally perfect now, driving at night is no problem at all!

My eyes had been getting steadily worse, I started going blind in about 3rd year at High School (and refused to wear glasses - how vain!!), getting the surgery done stops the deterioration somehow (think it's because they zap away all the tissue - not really sure!) but I went for my check up a year on and now have better than 20/20 vision.

My dad and boyfriend have also had it done in Aberdeen - they got Diazepam before it! I didn't - wimps!!

Mine cost £3770 in total (a lot I know!!) but that is for lifetime aftercare and was the last invasive, most accurate wavefront option....there are cheaper options.

The only drawback was not being allowed to wear eye make up for a week after! I was gutted! So got my eyelashes tinted before hand!!

Re: laser eye surgery?

hi sarah, so are your eyes fine now? no problems while driving at night? was your perscription for your eyes steady? or had it been getting worse when you decided to have it done? as my eyes have deterierated over the past 4 years to my current percscription so im worried if i get it done theyll just keep getting worse once time passes

I got zapped my Ultralase in Glasgow in November 2007 - best thing I have ever done! My prescription was -5.25 and -5.0, the procedure took about 10 mins and as soon as I sat up from the operating table I could see!! It truly is amazing!

I took out payment over 3 years, interest free which was all arranged with them.

They weren't satisfied with any of the companies. None of them told the true costs, none explained all the possible risks. for example its not advisiable if you suffer from dry eyes, which some of the researchers did, and I dont think any companies (or maybe one did) explained the risk of it getting worse with laser surgery.

Many people they had talked to had had to have further surgery to correct problems - which is where the cost implications come into it.

As mentioned above a lot of people suffer problems with night vision, where lights develop a halo around them which makes night driving near on impossible.

And most who had had it done still needed reading glasses if they were over 40

Re: laser eye surgery?

I started wearing glasses when i was in year 2 at school (so must be about 15 years ago) then converted to contacts just before i left school. I HATE wearing my glasses...don't think they suit me, get very peed off with steaming & rain drops! Did think about laser correction but decided i don't want to risk it, my sight is too important to me and contacts work well for me so i'm happy with them. If i didn't get on with contacts then maybe i'd think more about laser treatment. I know a couple of people who've had it done without problems, but it still scares me!

Re: laser eye surgery?

I know somebody in their 80's that had it done approx 3 years ago. It was good for a while and did mean that he didnt need glasses but now his eyesight is back to what it was (possibly slightly worse)

Another vet friend of mine had this done 2 weeks ago with ultralase - right eye is fine but left eye not so good has been offered revision surgery in 6 months if no improvement.

I considered this very briefly about 10 years ago - my corneas are very thin and patchy so it isnt possible. From speaking to other people and carrying out my own research with opticians etc - the general consensus seems to be wait until its been around a few more years, its new, and as already mentioned nobody is exactly sure how things could be affected in the future. Halos around lights and problems with night vision seem to be quite common.

I suppose the plus side for me was when I was having a check to see if I was suitable for surgery they picked up a condition that my specialist had missed for 5 years plus! - and only when it was nearly too late do I get treatment for it!

Re: laser eye surgery?

[quote user="Caro Laithwaite"]

My optician said to me to avoid it at all costs for the following reasons:

No long term effects known yet, as relatively new technology

Scarring on lens can affect night-time vision - his wife now cant drive at night as lights reflect off scar tissue causing lines in her vision.

He recently went to a international conference and out of thousands of opticians - only THREE opticians had the surgery

It is known that your sight degenerates post-operatively (over several years) but your eyesight can deteriorate to what it is currently however as you have had surgical correction, glasses and contact lenses are often unsuitable/ineffective.

II've been to my optician for as long as I can remember and even when i moved down to London I still travelled back to see him, when away I've temporarily used other opticians to obtain prescription for contacts or check up if eyes were sore and I couldn't get home and they have all said the same thing

I was seriously considering saving my pennies for this but don't think its worth the risk(in my opinion) as your eyes are so important
