I would love to work in Australia when qualified, how do you go about it? Is there a lot of work available and what are the best areas? I,m hoping to work with wild animals after spending 3 months working with big cats in Africa and exploring the wildlife of the amazon. I am lucky enough that our practice sees wild animals - Monkeys, lemurs etc which I love. Is it quite expensive to stay over there?

[/quote]

I just searched on the websites already mentioned and posted an advert on kookaburra stating that I was looking for work. There seems to be plenty of locum and casual work around, the working holiday visa (that you need to have been granted to legally work) limits you to six months per employer and to gain the second year you have to complete three months of regional work. The east coast is more populated, therefore will have more practices looking. WA where i am is more isolated however there is still a lot of practices in the metro area of Perth.

The cost of living is higher over here but it is manageable. I am unsure what nurses over east are paid but the minimum I have been paid is $26/hr for a 35hr week and i also get supa (similar to pension) on top of that.

Wildlife wise the clinic I am in we do a lot of work with local wildlife groups so do see some natives which is exciting. I have seen plenty of adverts for volunteers to work in Thailand and Asia that I would love to do! :)

RE: Working in Australia.

I would love to work in Australia when qualified, how do you go about it? Vetlink is a recruitment agency and you need to make a profile on seek. I live south of Perth and work in a private hospital, average rate of pay is normally $26-$30 an hour. Perth is expensive to live in - my rent when i lived in the city was about $160 per week, depends what suburb you live in though as some are more expensive. To work in WA as a registered nurse you need to be registered with the WA Surgeons board which costs about $65 a year. Any other questions feel free to message me! I have been here two years now and absolutely love it! :)

RE: Working in Australia.

Hey all! I'm planning on heading to Perth on a working holiday visa within the next 2 months. I've been offered a position for the first 6 months in a hospital. Is $30 AUD an hour a reasonable rate and ok to live on?

Kookbaurra is a great site to find jobs on.

Re: Working in Australia.

I'm very excited off you, it's the the best thing I've done in a while. I have only working in Sydney so far for a few of clinics/hospitals but the best thing I found was to advertise yourself. So use the website www.kookaburravets.com where you can also search for vacancies, but I found once I was on there they contact you a lot of the time. Come September as well which is tick bite season, I would imagine more availability to arise. If you want to be really proactive go around all the practices in the area you think you would like to stay so you meet them face to face, they LOVE IT.
Hostels are great to so if you get a job that is a it to travel you can always move nearer with no dramas. We met a load of our friends in hostels, plus if you are travelling on your own you will never be alone in a hostel or short of things to do. As I knew I would be at the same place for a few months I did actually find an apartment to stay in, plus I was with my boyfriend so it was nice to have a place to ourselves for a while.

Good luck and all the best
Enjoy x

Re: Working in Australia.

Im planning on coming to Australia soon (just waiting for my flat to sell) and will be locuming when i am there. I am very interested in talking to people or are there at present or have been as i am a little scared of the unknown.

Is it easy to find work? I am heading to Sydney initially and then plan to travel around and see as much of Australia as possible. Did you find work in didfferent places or is it mainly sydney/melbourne?

Where do you stay accomodation wise? I am thinking hostels to start with but not sure if this is a long term option really.

Any advice appreciated, really looking forward to it :)

Re: Working in Australia.

I suppose you've tried Currumbin?
