Don't VN badges have the registration number engraved on the back? (I'm still waiting for mine ¬_¬) so what's not to say someone poses as said person with their registration? Just a thought.. i don't see why you'd work hard to do something and then sell the badge i guess.. I can't wait to get mine i'll be so proud.. If a practice doesn't do checks on someone to see if they're actually registered then, yes, i agree that practice is ridiculous! I struggled to get a job with temporary registration due practices not understanding what it was so how half these fake VNs get jobs is actually beyond me..

While I personally wouldn't sell my badge, there's also a high possibilty that the person selling it is no longer a practicing nurse and thought they'd maybe try and sell one for cheap (didn't realise it would go for anything near the price it did!, that's crazy money) to someone that's lost theirs?

When I qualified, my badge broke within a couple of weeks so I never wore one my whole career, doesn't mean I'm not a VN. I recently bought the new reg'd one as it was cheaper than replacing my old one and the other nurses in my current place of work all wear theirs so I thought I'd join in.

Someone mentioned about people buying war medals don't plan on wearing them to pretend they're something/someone else? I think you'll find lots of stories about people doing just that! Pretending to be war heroes to get something for free.

I think if someone was pretending to be a VN purely by wearing a badge, the place they work must be highly lazy for not taking 2 seconds to check if they are in fact a QVN/RVN.

So let me get this right - you pay for a badge but then apart from wearing it to bling up a uniform you can do nothing with it? well I guess if one of the 'registered' badges escapes from captivity it will have a premium price on its head

Just to put an interesting spin on it. I've just completed my registration forms and on one part I had to sign to say i wouldnt sell my badge. Havnt looked at the one on eBay so not sure if its one of the new ones with 'registered' on it, maybe this only applies to the registered badges. I imagine the rcvs doesn't scan eBay and the likes and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do anything about it. Just thought I'd mention what my registration form. Personally couldn't give a flyer, but I defo won't be selling mine when I get it.

Yes, it is amusing isn't it? I too agree with Sal, no-one should be offering a job on the basis of a badge.

I think the next time I go for a job I will wear an "I am 21" badge and see if it will help stop people discriminating against me for my age!

Well isn't this an amusing thread. Personally I agree with Sal. Its just a badge at the end of the day and means very little in the grand scheme of things, and the fact some people seem to need a badge to validate themselves is a bit sad. You know you worked hard and everyone else does too, why do you feel you need a badge to prove it. I would be happy with or without one when is qualify and its a perfect way to get a new one if you lost yours rather than having to pay a lot from the RCVS.

just as an incidental there is a Royal College of Nursing badge on there now with less time to run going for a mere 99p - wonder how many outraged nurses are stalking the wards in the NHS

ok well thats your opinion and I respect that - so long as your opinion doesnt prevent somebody else from exercising their right that is fine.

Forget the badge/medals for a moment - what if say a collection of BSAVA manuals were available on ebay but somebody from BSAVA came along and said only BSAVA members and only BSAVA members who are vets can own them because they would be dangerous in the wrong hands because somebody who isnt a vet might learn how to do a procedure on an animal. Now imagine it is you trying to sell those manuals as a nurse and somebody is telling you you cant and as you are not a vet you shouldnt even have them I would imagine you would be pretty hacked off.

I didn't, I said it could potentially be used by someone to pose as a fake VN. I personally think that it's disrespectful to the qualification and makes a bit of a joke of it. I wouldn't dream of selling my badge.

the principle is the same. The badge/medal still belongs to the person or the family of the person it was awarded to, IT BELONGS TO THEM, IT IS THEIRS, they can dispose of it however they wish. It doesnt belong to whoever issued it. They are as able to sell it as they are any other of their belongings. How can you definitely say that this badge will go to somebody who will fraudulently use it to pose as a qualified nurse? or will it be bought by somebody who appreciates what went into earning it? As a collector if I was paying that much for a badge I would want to know a bit about it, what makes it scarce and what it was issued for.

If the argument here is that a piece of tin (a substandard one at that) is the only tangible evidence of a vet nurses ability to perform their duties then I am sorry but that to me is a very sad state of affairs.

This is honestly not worth anybody getting their knickers in a twist over when there is so much that is wrong with veterinary nursing that passes by unremarked

Yes but buying a war medal for a collection is completely different - the buyer is not going to use it to potentially pose as a fake professional. There have been cases before of people buying VN badges and wearing them under the pretence of being qualified, I find this completely insulting. I also find it a bit strange comparing war medals to a veterinary nursing badge that is currently in use - I know this is an older version but many nurses will still wear this style.

that was never disputed - but just to put this into perspective there were people who gave their best / gave their lives in the last war and that doesnt stop them or their families raising a bit of cash from their medals when they need it and it doesnt make their achievement any the less, or maybe you would like to condemn them too?

People work hard for their badges, when I get mine I'm hanging on to it and no way would I ever stick it on ebay! I personally think it should be taken off the site, same as any other badges which could be worn currently and worn so that people are passed off as qualified. Obviously practices should check more than the red badge when employing someone, but to me the red badge is an honour to have and should be worn with pride! :)

How would I feel about it? I wouldnt. If a practice is fool enough to take on a nurse on the basis of her ability to sport a bit of tin then they are clearly lacking. It takes seconds to go onto the RCVS website and check. If they cant be bothered to do that then they really arent that bothered about who they are taking on

by the number on this badge this is somebody who qualified very early on - certainly a lot earlier than myself (1996) so if somebody is wearing this badge expect them to be older than me or probably long retired.

Instead of the outrage that somebody should dare to want to sell a VN badge maybe we should be flattered - there are masonic badges changing hands for a lot less than that and I think the Masons beat us hands down on the 'elite stakes'

Seriously - get over it folks or buy it yourselves and take it out of circulation, the more interest in this badge the more the price goes up and the more desireable it becomes to collectors ( which may be something to consider if you find yourselves strapped for cash in the future )

I honestly cannot see the problem with this.

I will say I am amazed the badge that is for sale is in such good nick - ie pin still attached as a large percentage of them drop to bits within days of receipt. At £33 anybody wanting to replace a knackered badge it represents good value as it still comes in cheaper than a new one from the RCVS

In my badge collection I have red cross medals awarded from the last war, (doesnt mean I served in the red cross) RAF wings, a DFC (I have never served in the RAF let alone earned a DFC) badges from mission control at NASA and also most of the Soyuz missions ( I have neither worked for NASA or been into space to my recollection). This job is about more than the ability to wear a badge isnt it?

Could you use any of your badges in your collection to do the job that the badge demonstrates? I don't think so.

There have been so many stories of fake VN's and this could assist more. How would you feel if a pet died as result of a fake VN that managed to get a job because they had a badge off ebay?
