I also work in a rural veterinary hospital, which I love but I also locum at a referral hospital occasionally at weekends to challenge my nursing skills. My current job is cool with it as long as it does not affect my work, which of course it doesn't , well sometimes......if it has been super busy hard weekend, but normally it is fine.

You will get a feel for what else it out there and learn new skills from new people you meet, and there is also the extra pennies you earn which always helps

Re: Knowing when to move on

I just heard a statistic on tv last night (so obviously it' true?!) that aroud half of employees in the UK hate their jobs and think about leaving at least once every other day - woooaah! That was quite depressing. But eye-opening!

Re: Knowing when to move on

Hi Ann,

I think that if you have thought about it, and quite a lot, then it probably is time to move on. We never want to regret the things we haven't done after all! I worked in the same practice for 12 years, however there were always new challenges and developments, and opportunities for things like diploma and further CPD. As soon as I couldn't see a challenge any more I moved on, and I never regretted it.

I've never worked in a rural practice so I can't really comment on that, but urban practices tend to have a very large client base, and a very varied client base - and of course a lot of competition - therefore focus on 'offers', preventative healthcare, attempting to create bonded clients etc. I personally love this, as good business generally runs hand in hand with good healthcare...

I would say our biggest issue, if you now live in a rural area, is giving this up for a more built up area - if you are going to move too?
