I enjoy theatre nursing but recently have had to step out during procedures due to becoming 'overwhelmed'. I am not squeamish and am very interested in the operations, but find myself becoming faint about half an hour in - it starts with

Re: Scrub nurse fainting

I make sure I shift my weight from foot to foot, I also find if I look around at my surroundings that makes me feel worse so I try not to look around to much other than the sterile field. Make sure u have a drink and a snack before scrubbing in. Good luck!

Re: Scrub nurse fainting

Happened to me recently on a placemment to a vet hospital for 2 weeks - turns out was an ear infection the vertigo was something terrible I had to get out and lie down. I really wanted to go in and watch the ortho ops to but was scared i'd conk out, probably just as well as the op lasted more then 2 hours. I,ll need to get practicing.

Not sure if this would work but maybe worth a try as we use them sometime with humans with hypotension to improve return and support the legs - support/compression stockings. You'd get them from GP/nurse.

Re: Scrub nurse fainting

This used to Happen to me, my blood pressure was low, I to like described above used to remove my shows and wiggle my toes..
I find if you're busy you don't have time to overanalyse how you are feeling, maybe this is why you start feeling this way after half an hour (when all the busy part of opening kits, draping up, running around for bits and pieces and making the incision is over)

Don't want to play down how you are feeling but I found this happened to me when I was younger and I found keeping busy until it became less of a big deal really helped me, hope you get it sorted soon!

Re: Scrub nurse fainting

I have nearly fainted when scrubbed in due to the heat. I now take my socks off which keeps my feet cooler and I've not had anymore problems. I know a few vets who do this as well.

Re: Scrub nurse fainting

Or pregnant?

Re: Scrub nurse fainting

Check your blood sugar and blood pressure - are they normal?
