I come accross it a few times in practice - usually where there is a high turnover of nurses so the practice employs foreign new grads instead. I worked with one and he was totally useless and actually a liability as he thought he new what he was doing and clearly did not! RVCS should monitor this, but of course they won't , Grrr!

Re: Is this allowed?

Yes, I'd like to second that bump!

Will the RCVS be using some of my hard-won (and reluctantly given) annual retention fee towards protecting job opportunities for myself and my colleagues by actively regulating and discouraging this sort of thing?

I hope the RCVS realises that their response (or, more likely, complete lack of) to this situation gives the opportunity to redeem themselves in the eyes of many RVNs who, frankly, see the College as a bit of a bureaucratic, ineffectual joke, completely uninterested in the concerns of this profession.

Re: Is this allowed?

*BUMP*

A veterinary surgeon can only practise in the UK if he or she is correctly registered as a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and will not usually have the qualifications to register as a veterinary nurse. Under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, certain veterinary procedures may be delegated to veterinary nurses (those listed or registered with the RCVS), or to student veterinary nurses (enrolled with the RCVS). Anyone who is not correctly registered or listed with the RCVS may not carry out these procedures.

So will the RCVS be contacting the practice that is recruiting to let them know this?

Re: Is this allowed?

Hi
zalenski81

We
saw your post and wanted to clarify the position - as you rightly imply,
veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses are two different professions, with
each contributing different skills to the veterinary team and having its own
regulatory framework.

Recent
changes to the Code of Professional Conduct for veterinary surgeons and VNs
also now require both to keep to the core standards of the Practice Standards
Scheme (PSS). This emphasises that a veterinary nurse is a person whose name is
entered in the List of Veterinary Nurses (which incorporates the Register of
Veterinary Nurses).

There is also supporting guidance to the Codes about delegating to veterinary nurses (see http://www.rcvs.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/code-of-professional-conduct-for-veterinary-surgeons/supporting-guidance/delegation-to-veterinary-nurses) and we are also working to achieve legislative changes that
will further protect the title of veterinary nurse.

A
veterinary surgeon can only practise in the UK if he or she is correctly
registered as a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and
will not usually have the qualifications to register as a veterinary nurse.
Under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, certain veterinary procedures may be
delegated to veterinary nurses (those listed or registered with the RCVS), or
to student veterinary nurses (enrolled with the RCVS). Anyone who is not
correctly registered or listed with the RCVS may not carry out these
procedures.

Hope
this helps

Claire

What's the deal?

Well, it's certainly a can of worms, I'll say that. It's not illegal for a vet to do a nurse's job, as far as I know. This is the first I've seen someone advertising for it, though!
