At the moment we just thread them through swabs but this is not ideal. I haven't been able to source any suture needle holders large enough yet. Any ideas please

Re: Large animal suture needles

We managed to find some plastic boxes and some small metal tins especially for suture needles from Veterinary Instrumentation. They were not cheap but at least you knew where the needles were when you opened the kit out.

Re: Large animal suture needles

thanks for all your suggestions. we may try the tin approach as large animal needles through swabs just aren't working for us

Re: Large animal suture needles
you can get tins of mints
Sounds a good plan. I found that continually slotting the needle through a swab would blunt it and half the time it wouldnt stay secure in the swab.

Re: Large animal suture needles

Following on from what Sal said - you can get tins of mints and stuff in the shops can't you? Maybe buy a few of those if you're worried about jabbing fingers on needles in swabs? Maybe get one first to make sure they go through the autoclave okay first though

Re: Large animal suture needles

We just slot them through a square of drape we pack the kits in. There's usually a bit left at the end which isn't big enough for drapes or packing kits so we cut it into squares and use it for that

Re: Large animal suture needles

we used to use the small cigarette tins or tobacco tins (plentiful supply as the boss was a smoker)

Re: Large animal suture needles

In my old practice, the one vet threaded them through the gauze swab and the other vet used flutter valve tubing
