I'm going to be doing my mock practical exam on Monday and just wondered if you had any tips. I have been practicing lots but I just don't feel like it is all going in. I'm dreading going in there and going completely blank. Also we have to

Re: Mock practicals in Monday!!

Ok, I'm definitely interested if the person doesn't get back to you.

I just disposed of everything in clinical waste in the practical (except sharps obviously!) and didn't stop any marks, so is do this if i were you.

The person restraining the horse stands on the same side as you. Don't step in front of the horse, lean round from the side, or you'll be deemed unsafe.

They will provide a stylet for you to check the patency, and you should also look through it up to the light to check for obstructions.

Ayres t piece- it sounds like yours has a leak! The bag should stay inflated when you have your finger over the patient end just like the other anaesthetic circuits.

Head dressing- don't know! Luckily didn't get that one in my practicals, just make sure it's neat and no padding is showing, check the tension, comment on how neat it is, and keep your fingers crossed! I polled the dog in the leg with my scissors because my hands were so shaky, and they passed me- so they do accept you'reonly human!

Blue for i/m, Orange is too small, they just had one of each size when i did mine, so i drew up with green and switched for a blue administer.

It sounds like you've worked really hard, so just go in there and so your best! Sounds stupid, but smile and say thank you at the of every task- it reminds you that the examiners are human and you might even get a smile back (but don't count on it!)

For tube feeding, it says dispose of syringes (food and sterile water) in appropriate waste. Would this just be normal waste? But as it is in a syringe I don't know if they expect us to put it in clinical?

Gloves used for dispensing tablets, where would they want us I dispose of them?

We now have I/M horse injections, where should I get the person restraining to stand whilst I'm giving the injection in the pectoral muscle?

Checking an et tube is patent? In practice we blow down the tube but I don't think they would find this appropriate?

We never use an ayes t piece at work but i managed to find one at the back of the draw (none of us knew we had it). How do I check this for leaks? As I closed off the apl valve and the bag went down with gentle pressure - couldn't see any leaks but don't know if this was just our circuit?

Head dressing - how can you do a 1/2 - 3/4 rotation when it's in a figure of 8? :s

Last one...
What size needles did you all use for what in the practicals? Blue for I/M? Orange?

Sorry for so many questions just really nervous!!
