I had thought it was the premed but then we have had a couple who haven't been premedded straight away and they have started salivating before the premed. I had put it down to stress as I know my own dog if very stressed will pant and hypersalivate. If it is stress related the small fluffy dogs I suppose are usually the more spoilt ones less used to being away from home?

Re: Hypersalivation after pre-meds

I see it regularly post op. Mostly in Acp/Vet premeds. Use Methadone, and CRI's a lot and see it less in them.

Have worked places where they give cerenia as they believed it to be nausea - and that seems to have good effect. At my current clinic, the vets are not keen on giving anything to combat the Hypersalivation. They seem to think Atropine is the only drug they would use....

Re: Hypersalivation after pre-meds

I believe methadone is now licensed so it is slowly replacing morphine in general practice as per the cascade. Generally hyper salivation seems to be a regular occurrence within our practice, I tend to see it more post op. we also use buprenorphine/acp as our default premed.

Re: Hypersalivation after pre-meds

Thanks guys. None of my previous practices used methadone which explains why I hadn't heard of it.

Re: Hypersalivation after pre-meds

hiya,
