Been in practice for a while and have always used isoflo. Never had a problem and very confident in anaesthetics.

But I'm in a new practice and they use sevo. All of a sudden I'm panicking about when I

Re: Sevoflurane

Hi - if you would like some information send me an private message and we can discuss in detail.

Re: Sevoflurane

I use a lot of sevo at work, we do tend to mask / chamber down our small things and sevo isn't irritant to mucous membranes like iso. Would tend to disagree with a previous poster though in that I think you tend to maintain on a higher percentage... that's why the dial goes to 8%!! Mind you this will of course depend on your induction agent.

Also you can alter your anaesthetic depth quickly when you change the percentage so you should be able to respond to any signs as per usual, just dont be in a hurry to turn it off until you are prepared for an awake animal! With our animals that are gassed down I find they are on their feet with TWO MINUTES of turning off the gas!

I know new/different things can be daunting but seriously, there is very little difference in the monitoring. If the animal is waking up, give it more Your nurse colleagues will be know the way the GAs tend to go (with the induction agents + pre-meds that your vets use) so by all means listen to them if they say "Oh, I usually start them on 5% and then turn down to 3% for those types of op" but at the end of the day you'll be watching your animal as conscientiously as ever and responding in turn. Within a week you won't be even thinking about it.

Good luck!

Re: Sevoflurane

I've used both iso and sevo in both of my past two practices. We tend to used iso for cats and dogs, while sevo for small furries. Most of the monitoring has been pretty similar in both, but as previously said recovery is slightly quicker with sevo.

Hope this helps :)

Re: Sevoflurane

Hi,
We use sevo in my practice but my prevoius work used iso. Don't panic you will adjust pretty quickly. The main difference I found was you tend to need a lower amount with sevo than iso. And the recovery is normally quicker so you have to be prepared once you turn off the sevo. Besides from that I found the monitoring to be pretty similar. Just trust your instincts.
