I was wondering what the general consensus is for giving 2nd vaccines to puppies that had a 1st with breeder but your vaccine brand is different to that of the breeder?
Some practices insisit puppies re start their course so have 2 vaccs with

Re: 2nd vaccine/different vaccines- practice protocol

Should be valid regardless of brand. My concern is with breeders giving vaccines, you don't know how its stored/mixed/administered/etc. Don't think should trust a vaccine unless administered by a veterinary practice so would defo do restart with breeder vaccines. Wondering what protocol is with adult animals and restart vaccines though, if annual booster is beyond the year, what is protocol for giving booster, or are restart vaccines required?

Re: 2nd vaccine/different vaccines- practice protocol

I've just started at a new practice & asked about this.. The new vets I'm working with don't insist on restarting
It's only the manufacturers that tell you that & if you think about it, it's for their financial gain!
It's the vaccines, just in a different bottle/labelling.

My last practice used to insist on restarting & I had to grit my teeth to tell the clients, hated it 😕
So am much happier now I don't have to.

As you say, years ago it was never an issue, you never heard of wild reactions etc, pets were fine.
Political correctness gone wrong I say!! 😜

Re: 2nd vaccine/different vaccines- practice protocol

Hello Helen, I'm with Chris on this one. We tell our clients that they must have 1st and 2nd vaccines using the same batch. However, we stress to those clients who don't wish to restart, that we couldn't give them the guarantee 100% that they would be covered totally. Our practice doesn't like to take the risk so usually we don't allow different first and second batch vaccinations. As for allowing puppy socialising until covered I can recommend puppy classes where puppies are still the same with vaccination history. Equally they can socialise with dogs the owner knows the full vaccination history for I.e. dhppi, Lepto and kennel cough.

Hope this helps

We told told clients it didn't matter what brands of vaccine we used. Now we advise that we can give our make of vaccine but that the manafacturer will not guarantee its use when mixed with a different make. But we know that vaccines like nobivac and canigen are made by the same company!
