Regarding anaesthetic gases, for the RCVS accreditation we are required to EITHER have dosemeter recods or an active scavenging system - we have the scavenging system so no dosemeters necessary. I have been a bit dubious about this regulation though as it does not account for leaks...

Re: Dose meters

that is very strange! you are still using xrays and the radiation exposure chances are exactly the same. surly the way you take the actual exposures haven't change?! weird!

Re: Dose meters

[quote user="nursek8"]

I think it's part of the Health and Safety Act that you have to regularly monitor anaesthetic gases such as iso and sevo. I know it's all something that has to be done to qualify practices under the RCVS accreditation scheme. The company that services your vapourisers should be able to clarify the frequency for you. (we currently do isoflurane once a year, offset by 6 months from when we have our annual service).

Re: Dose meters

[quote user="chris beasley"]

Have spoken to our Radiation Adviser, who says as we have a digital machine and all previous readings have been 0.00, we do not require dosemeters at all!

How strange! We have a digital system--for the past three years--and still do the TLDs via the HPA every three months (changeover was yesterday, in fact).

Re: Dose meters

Have spoken to our Radiation Adviser, who says as we have a digital machine and all previous readings have been 0.00, we do not require dosemeters at all!

Sorry i did mean xray dose meters. Seems quite a few people are now doing these, but the costs vary greatly. Would be interested to hear how other practices have dealt with this problem and how good their company is.

Re: Dose meters

Do you mean radiation dosimeters, or anaesthetic exposure dosimeters? If radiation then, as mentioned, your RPA should be able to point you in the right direction, or you can contact the HPA direct (the HPA also run the radiation protection services and do TLD monitoring direct).

If you mean anaesthetic monitoring, check with whichever company dose your vapouriser and/or oxygen equipment servicing. Either they will run a concommitant exposure monitoring service, or they'll be able to recommend a company to you.

Re: Dose meters

Do you mean radiation doses???
