Living in republic of ireland. And yes I know there is no money to be made. The girl who has left my current job [as a vet receptionist] is now working in a bank, cushy hours and good money, decent breaks, etc! But as I tells myself - you can do a job you love OR you can get paid! I'm so not fussed on the money end of it.... would be nice to fix my crappy car or have somewhere to live some day but sure, what can ya do?

Please be realistic - very few people make a fantastic living from veterinary work (including most of the vets I know), minimum wage is the best many trainees can expect most of the time if the practice is footing the bill for training and the cost of having somebody spending time mentoring them. If you are struggling with money now there is absolutely nothing to be gained from forcing yourself into penury in the hope that you will get a job that will be just as low paid. I understand you are keen to get a training position ( dont know where I got that idea - may have been from one of your umpteen posts ) but sometimes we cant just have what we want when we want it, and we have to wait until the time is right. I had to do factory work whilst the job I wanted became available - didnt want to do it, but I did it none the less to keep me afloat and to put me in a better position to be able to afford to move around for work, so my advice to you would be if you have the chance to find better paid work then take it to build up a few resources that you will need when the training job does come up.

Sorry if this isnt what you want to hear or you find it negative but just saying it as it is

Good for you for being honest! I came into this industry knowing what the pay would be like and it is! People looking into this career need to know that even if you are lucky enough to get a training postion its hard work and low pay. I dont mind i still ruddy love it! I myself have just qualified as an ANA and i would leave this industry for anything. I'm currently looking for a training post but im quite happy doing my receptionist/ANA position until one comes up. experience is invaluble so imsitcking here for as long as it takes. Like many others i'd pay to put myself thorugh it. I also feel that the situation is the same every where country to country and job to job its hard out there right now.

I'd also happily pay for my training. I've volunteered full time for 9 months each in two separate practices to get experience. I'm now working on minimum wage as a vet receptionist in a non-training practice. They rely on volunteers so there will never be a paid veterinary assistant position or training. I'd go back to college, but I've already spent 6 years studying for a degree and masters in a different subject, and I simply can't afford another three years. Plus it would seem ludicrous to go back to sitting in lecture theatres, when I actually want to be working IN a practice, getting hands on experience, and studying in my own time outside of work. Getting to point where I should think of giving up my passion for working in veterinary, and go get a "real" job.... even though I know I'd hate it... :-(

Re: The age old story....

I also paid for my own training and worked unpaid for a year at my practice, we have had some good enthusiastic students but also ones that expect to walk in and do our job, get paid, get their training paid and put zero effort in to the actual course and constantly have to be told what to do.
I have brought up the issue of VN shortage/TP red tape vs Vet Grad overload and no regulation of EMS. I did this with Nick Stace at TP Congress and will be chasing it up with him soon. (he is quite busy!)

Could people on here post about any regional blackspots about finding TPs? There may be a trend of people from these areas undertaking degree/FdSc/Full time diploma where placements are provided.

It seems ludicrous to me that there is currently no middle ground. Why must SVNs be so heavily regulated and quality assured during time in practice, yet Vet Students do not even get a H&S assessment of the practices they spend many hours at!

Re: The age old story....

There are ways to do training without a training practice, ie the degree route.
Also at my previous practice we had many trainees working unpaid and paying to put themselves through college, sometimes I think people expect practices to pay for their training when in other professions people pay for themselves to go to uni or do training etc.
My practice paid for my training but I only got paid £40 a month for working full time as a token gesture. If its something you really want to do there are ways

Re: The age old story....
I know it's a struggle but sometimes you have to also think of this from the practice POV. Some don't want SVNs 'cos their QVNs just don't have the time to train them, some don't want unqualifieds 'cos there is a big limit on what they can do without supervision. Plus (I believe) there's a lot of hoop jumping involved to become a TP and some places just can't be bothered with it.
will also add there is a considerable drop out rate among trainees and this also acts as a deterrent to some practices

You also have to consider that the training as it is now whilst satisfying your requirements may not satisfy the needs of the practice. Often you can learn an appreciable amount whilst working in practice without the formal training. Dont discount practices that dont do the formal training, and dont limit yourself to practices that are TPs. Experience is just as important in some practices.

The number of training practices is not going to alter that much as things stand so its just going to be a case of taking whats on offer (same as I did when I started out, nothing has really changed that much, there has always been a shortage of training places)
