Had a possible broken leg and the owners didn't want to do anything. They kept coming up with a variety of rubbish excuses and refused to sign over to the rspca so in the end we had to put

Re: Sad day could we have done anymore? =/

I had a case in a previous practice where the client had taken a lurcher from a rehoming kennels; it had escaped from his garden a couple of times and ended up being an RTA. Luckily there was minimal damage to the dog, cuts and bruises, the client however decided he didn't want the dog to cause another problem and wanted it PTS. I used to work in said kennels and know full well they would have happily taken the dog back to rehome to someone who may have been more appropriate. I suggested this as well as other alternatives about how to keep the dog secure in his garden. But no. The perfectly healthy dog with no real injuries was PTS.

Re: Sad day could we have done anymore? =/
the practice do it FOC to allow the younger/less experienced vets to learn the repairs.
thats great if they have somebody who knows what they are doing immediately on hand to assist with any problems, but if there isnt I would prefer they practice on cadavers - I know everybody has to start somewhere but these animals have to live with the results and just because they have no owners or anybody to speak up on their behalf...... to me it isnt always right to attempt a repair and put an animal through a lengthy procedure when their future is uncertain. I used to work as a nurse for a large charity and there were times when I dreaded the meccano set coming out because of who was playing with it. There are times when amputation is by far the best option for the animal as it more likely to get over the surgery and be comfortable quicker.

it was very sad that the owner didnt want to even give the dog a chance or sign over - just hope they dont go out and get another dog

Poor doggy and how sad for you guys, it is a very difficult situation though. In the past I have got the practice to agree to treat the dog FOC and get the owners to sign the dog over to my care, i then rehab them and rehome them, the practice do it FOC to allow the younger/less experienced vets to learn the repairs.

You have to be very very careful doing this sort of thing as the owner could turn round and ask why you couldn't do it FOC for them to be able to keep it especially if their main reason is not being able to afford treatment

Re: Sad day could we have done anymore? =/

Yeah, this guy wouldn't even sign the dog to the rspca so i doubt he would have done that either =(

Re: Sad day could we have done anymore? =/

Poor doggy and how sad for you guys, it is a very difficult situation though.
