I am considering leaving my full time nursing job and undertaking locum work. The recruitment agencies have asked me if I intend to become self-employed or work wth an umbrella company. i have to admit that I know very little about either option

Re: self -employed locum nurses

Thanks I will follow up the recommendation

Re: self -employed locum nurses

Hi,

I locumed for 5 years and was self employed for the first 2, i then started using an umbrella company, mainly because as you've mentioned vet nurses can't quite meet the eligibility to be self employed (on that note neither can vets, but they seem ok), alot of clinics would not take me on as self employed due to the financial implications it may cost them in the long run. I found the umbrella company very helpful and it did save me money, still need to keep all your invoices and receipts, but there are some good ones out there if you look, i would recommend MAC professionals or Danbera.

Any more help - let me know

I was initially given the impression that I had to register with HMRC, keep a record of my work hours/locations/expenses and log them daily as well as retain any receipts for outgoings and then at the end of the financial year complete a self-assessment tax return with earning and expenses. I was also told i needed to set up a regular payment for NI contributions which all seemed straightforward but now I am not so sure. Can any one help clarify things. Jill VN

Yes that is basically what I did - attended a days free course set up by HMRC, kept a daily log, kept an invoice book and issued a numbered invoice after every job to whichever practice, kept all receipts and accurate cash records, paid NI contributions I think every quarter through the post office, set aside a portion of earnings every week towards tax, filled in a self assessment tax return, handed over the money I was told I owed them and that was basically it
