Just wanted to tap into everyone's experience to help me out in a situation I've managed to get myself into. Just registered a new client unhappy with her old vets, upon discussion the claims she was making sound.. well to be honest pretty

Re: Potential difficult client & nervy collie

Yes I agree. You must start as you mean to go on. If you think the dog needs to be muzzled then explain this and do so there is no point putting yourself at risk just in case you upset the owner.

As above I have definitely found from experience that trying to please an owners every whim just gets worse with time - in fact sometimes sticking your guns has a positive effect as they respect you more-not always though!

Re: Potential difficult client & nervy collie

The first thing you must do is realise you can't win with a client like this - she will inevitably fall out with your practice eventually. It sounds like the last practice was perfectly sensible - and they are probably thrilled she has now gone elsewhere!

Be matter-of-fact, say what is right regardless of whether the owner wants to hear it, and keep safe - if the dog needs a muzzle, then say so. Pandering to people like this is pointless - they usually get more and more demanding over time!

Oh, and obviously don't join in with the discussion about the local practice - just say that as you don't know both sides of the story you can't comment. She'll soon run out of steam!

Goodluck
