I was under the impression we were not allowed to charge owners for processing claims? However, I walked into my local surgery the other day to see a notice up advising clients of charges to process claims.
Has the rule now changed? and if so

Re: insurance claim process charges

We charge £5.75 to process insurance forms which is a one off charge unless a new condition is claimed for in the future

Re: insurance claim process charges

We don't charge, but do now use vet envoy to help process claims. Although there is a charge (25p) to the practice for each claim processed I feel that this is offset by the amount of time saved and no printing costs, the only problem is that I wish more insurance companies would sign up.

Re: insurance claim process charges

I used to work somewhere where we charged £6 per claim, don't charge in my current clinic

Re: insurance claim process charges

We charge a one off fee of £7 per animal, no-ones complained so far!

Re: insurance claim process charges

When I first came into the veterinary profession many years ago - we did charge for completing claims forms! I do all the claims in our practice and some are quick, but those with more than one problem can be a pain to divide out. These are the ones I think we should charge for. You need to get it right!I

One of our clients complained a while ago about how long it took for us to fill out his claim. In this case it was only four days as I was waiting for the vet concerned to return from holiday. He said we should get more staff! Maybe in future I should reply if we had more staff we would have to charge him!

Think it may have been one of those chinese whispers stories then, Just a few years back we heard another practice was fined for making admin charges. Maybe it was making fees higher for insured clients compared to uninsured??

Thanks for that x

Re: insurance claim process charges

Hi
I have never heard that we were not allowed to charge for completing claim forms. I used to work for Pet plan and know a lot of practices that charged for completing claims (this is not covered by policy though as it is viewed as an admin charge). You may be getting confused with the period of time vets were not allowed to charge for prescriptions (we are now).

I have mixed feelings on this issue as an insured client often prove more profitable for the practice (totally legitamitley) so claims should just be part of the job however, i do know how much time completing forms can take and with the added work of providing hisotories - often more than once, the cost to the pratice can add up.
