I did the Exotics C&G back in 2010, so a few years now.

Clothing wise, just wore normal clothes, not uniform/scrubs.

The practical from memory was a room with about 20 different stations and we moved around the room answering questions on items that were placed at each station. The items included, equipment, feed stuffs, pictures etc.

Must say the course was fab and still to this day refer back to my notes from the course. We see a fair number of exotics at my current practice so the knowledge is in constant use

Hi All- bringing this old topic back up...I'm cramming in all my last minute revision for exams on Wednesday, happy enough with the MCQ's. Girling/Fraser website lists some examples of practical scenarios but if anyone can expand on that so I can be as prepared as I can be, I would really appreciated that!!

Also..does everyone just wear normal clothes? There's no expectation to be in uniform/scrubs, is there?

I've heard nothing but good things about this course :-)

I'd also love to do it, although I don't think we see enough exotics being in a mixed practise to complete the case studies etc :-(

Hi,

I completed (and thankfully passed the course) last year, i found it really useful, especially if you are keen to get into an exotic practice. There are cases and short answer questions and multiple choice questions at the end of each module and an exam written and practical at the end of the year.

Both Simon and Mary are extremely helpful, and quick at responding to your end of module short answer questions with good feedback given. I learnt alot and i recommend the course - definatley will need to get the exotic nursing book by Simon Girling to complete the course

When my nurse did the city and guilds she had to do case reports, essays etc - do you no longer do this then?

Hi Jellybatt, I am doing this course at the moment and I love it, it is really interesting. It is fairly straightforward but covers a wide range of species. There are 4 modules- Avian, Reptile and Amphibian, Small Mammals and British Wildlife. Each module has a section for husbandry, nutrition, handling and chemical restraint/ anaesthesia, therapeutics/ diseases, and fluid therapy. You just email the answers back at the end of each section. I could probably get a whole section done in one or two evenings if I put my mind to it, so you can do it as fast or slow as you like as there is a whole year to do it in. I have finished it all already, I am just waiting for the exam in November now. I did have to print it all off though, as I am not good at learning things online. If you are into your exotic patients I would really recommend it :) Pepper
