No - minimum wage applies in all cases - you are still paid an hourly rate! You can work it out quite easily by dividing your annual salary by 52 weeks then by the number of hours you work a week.

Re: Nurses wages

My understanding of minimum wage is that this only applies if you are working and getting paid by the hour.

Definately check on this- in my TP if I left within a year of qualifying I would have had to pay back all my college fees, exam fees, registration fees and the day per week where I was paid to go to college. It was worth sticking around for a year (although I was on more than you are) even though my rent took more than half my monthly wage and I was left with nothing at the end of each month so I neven even had a holiday- holiday was going back to mum and dad's for a week.

Re: Nurses wages
I have just qualified and im in the process of being registered. Im still receiving below minimum wage for a 47 and a half hour week. There is only 1 other qualified nurse who is noe senior vet nurse she is on a salary of £19,000 per annum, where as my wage is below £12,000. I am broke most months and find it hard to live on this wage. Im so disheartened that after 6 years of hard work and going to college that this is all i make. Im thinking of changing careers just because of the wage being so low. this will break my heart as i love my job but i need more money to live on as im not living at the minute just survivng.

can anyone help me with this or give me a rough guide so i can ask the boss why im getting below the legal minimum wage?

thanks
If you are in the process of registering is your wage set to rise once you are registered? Would agree with Gillian - work out your hourly rate and see if it does definitely fall below the minimum wage because then you may have grounds to complain. But yes you may just be better looking for another job. There are practices that do pay a relatively low rate to newly qualifieds partly to 'encourage' them to move on so they can employ another student, in fact there are places where it is written into the contract that once you qualify you leave - and I suppose this does free up training places for the next bunch seeing as there are so few training places available now ( and thats what everybody wants isnt it? - more training places)

If you decide to move on just double check your contract to make sure you dont have to stay for a specified period post qualification or have to pay back training expenses to the practice. Dont forget the practice has invested in your training.

Its nice to think that the VN qualification also qualifies you for a good wage but the reality can be a lot different - I was a head nurse working considerably more than 47.5hrs a week for a busy practice with more than 10yrs post qual experience and my salary was 14k, and it wasnt that long ago

Re: Nurses wages

I agree, look for another job, that is a shocking wage, I was on more than when I was a 1st years student!!
