I own 3 hermanns and the advice I'd give is make sure you do your research and own all equipment before getting the tortoise. Best place for info is the tortoise trust website, shelled warriors forums and as for books you'll find a good one on amazon if you type 'pet expert tortoise'

Other things to consider is the age of the tortoise your getting and the gender.
Females can have egg laying issues if not looked after properly. Males don't have this problem but in terms of their behaviour they are more active and can display aggression when 'in the mood' ;)

I'd advise buying from a breeder instead of a pet shop. You'll have a tortoise which will be a better health and you can see how it has been raised.

Don't hibernate on your first year until comfortable with how your tortoise is normally/ at a good health. This will give you plenty of time to prepare the year after.

They are more complicated to care for then some think. A 'beginner' tortoise isn't as simple as providing warmth and food. Environmental conditions and diet have to be of a good standard to avoid health issues

I currently have a tortoise, not a hermanns but very similar a russian tortoise aka. horsfield tortoise. they're great pets we have a mediterrian tortoise too that we rescued, they are very cute and quiet easy to look after on a daily basis. but do your research to look for signs of a good quality tortoise e.g good shell shape ext. I have done tonnes of research before buying about lamps, temperature, bathing them regularly, food especially naughty food that people feed that you shouldn't! and most importantly hibernating them. Also i would recommend when looking for your perfect tortoise look at what size they grow too when older. my 3 year old lives inside and my 26 year old outside totally different tortoises with totally different needs such as basking lamps. You'll need one once you have a tort! They may well know some needing a home clsoe to you.

Do the Tortoise Trust course - its brilliant. They had suspended it while they moved offices, but hope its back up and running.

Please avoid Cosy Tortoises based near Bristol - had really bad service from them when trying to buy a tortoise hut.
One of my vets has got a lovely tortoise from The Cinnamon Trust. They quite often have tortoises needing new homes that have lived with their previous owners for years. They have a network of support throughout the UK so may be able to transport a tortoise to you if there is not on suitable nearby.

Also please don't forget the Tortoise Trust who do excellent work for chelonians everywhere - If I could I would prefer to adopt an animal through a rescue than supporting a breeder, don't forget all those breeders churning out little tortoises for pet shops who then end up being presented at 1 year old with paper-thin carapaces from poor diets Sorry, slightly mad about chelonia!!

This is their rescue forum
