Definitely do it first thing in the morning before they've had their breakfast! Worst comes to worst this gives them all day to find their way home before it gets dark if they do decide to leg it.

I'd take a favourite wand-toy or something with me to coax them back toward me too, and just take a book or something and sit on the back step with them and have breakfast or something - and just try to chill out!

Re: letting my cats out

I would leave it at least at month so they get used to their new surroundings! You wouldnt want to be too keen letting them out for them not to come home!

When i first let my cats out i made sure i was in all day and left the door un-done so they could wonder in and out as they pleased to get used to their new outdoor territory.

Im sure they will love it when they're let out, and start bringing you back all sorts of presents! x

Re: letting my cats out

If you`ve just moved i`d leave it a few more weeks to be honest until they`re properly settled. After i move i always let mine out for the first time when they are hungry so they easy to get back in and i start with just a few minutes at a time so they can gradually get used to their surroundings. It`s quite stressful for the first few times but it`ll get easier as time goes on and you won`t worry so much!
