I am currently locuming nad have noticed the past three week my umbrella company has not paid me my allowed expenses ( mileage and lunch) When I rang them to find out why they told me it was part of The Agency Workers Regulations and the goverment

Re: Locuming, Umbrella Company not paying me my allowed expenses!

I know that when I used an umbrella company they wouldn't put through all of my mileage. They claimed that they could only put through mileage that totalled a certain percentage of my income, and so I regularly ended up out of pocket that way, I do not like or trust umbrella companies and would suggest doing your own paperwork as it is not hard to do.

You will be much better off by avoiding using them as much as possible.

Re: Locuming, Umbrella Company not paying me my allowed expenses!

I agree with Sal - the paperwork's not that difficult to do yourself - as long as you can use a spreadsheet then you're away!

That way you are in control of your own finances, and as Sal says, as long as you put something aside to cover your tax bill then it should be fine.

I appreciate that doesn't help your current situation, but maybe something to consider for the future?

Re: Locuming, Umbrella Company not paying me my allowed expenses!

Speak to your tax office about this. This is one of the big reasons I never used an umbrella company when I was a locum. I did my own paperwork - its really not that difficult to do and the IR even do short courses foc to show you how to do it, just remember to set some money aside from your earnings and dont be tempted to dip into it, keep your invoices and receipts straight and your bookwork up to date and honestly you shouldnt have a problem, I would say if I could manage it most people could

Have the umbrella company given you any indication as to how much is in your fund or how long they have to hang onto your money?

If you are working through an agency - was it the agency that insisted you had to go through an umbrella company? or was it your choice?

dont know if you have found this already or if it is of any use?

the other place to try would be CAB but I realise if you are locumming you prob wont have the time to do that unless you have a day off. Hope you can get this sorted
