I dont think anyone purposely sets themselves up to fail, maybe they are late handing things in because they are struggling, or less likely to put them selves forward and help out in fear of doing something wrong.

You may have already considered this but thought it was worth mentioning. Sometimes someone may even act like they dont care to deflect from the fact they are actually really struggling. It might be worth talking to them and just finding out more about the reasons why they arnt handing things in and getting involved and explain they you are there to help them if they need it.

If it is that they generally just arn't trying them maybe try and find out what they think being qualified means and try and encourage them by explaining how proud it should make them feel and what they can do after they qualify, it could help getting them to identify the parts of the work they really enjoy and explaining how they can get more involved in that area after.

Not sure if this helped but just thought id mention a different approach.

Re: motivation!

thanks for the reply at least you are keen - i know not all youngsters are like this one of our students is 18 and brilliant!! just fed up of feeling like a nag!

Re: motivation!

Not all us young ones are like this!

Ok well maybe i am not as young as some of them these days, but we have an 18 year old in practice and shes far more willing to learn and helpful than some of the older ones. There is also a 17 year old, and she does fall into the unmotivated category. Maybe you have just been really unlucky?

At the end of the day, its their qualification that is at risk, lazy attitudes do not get red badges! That is my motto anyhow :D
