Have any of you who are currently studying towards or have completed the advanced diploma taken either diagnosic imaging, medical nursing or infection control as your options. I'm really torn between them. I am currently taking small animal

Re: Advanced diploma modules. Both were really good but I enjoyed the Medical nursing more.

Like you I was better with the diagnostic imaging but stuck in 1st opinion practice. I did a few weeks at two referral practices and that was enough for my case logs. So it could still be an option.

The medical nursing just opened my eyes a bit to being more aware of what I was doing and why. I can assess patients better and cater for their needs.

Re: Advanced diploma modules.
Thanks everyone for your feedback. I have decided to do medical nursing with the possibility of just doing diagnosic imaging as a cpd module after completion of my diploma!

Cheers

I chose anaesthesia, medical nursing and ECC. I have always been a surgical person and opted for medical as I felt it would teach me more.

I would have loved to do DI, but it wasnt running. However you can go back and do single modules as CPD. I am planning this for DI soon! Can you do that with the Advanced Diploma?

Re: Advanced diploma modules. As you say diagnostic imaging is ok if you have access to them and if you are in referral pratice. I found medical nursing very interesting as you very able to learn and understand the disease processes in much more depth.

Re: Advanced diploma modules. There is a lot of physiology involved but I found it's all much easier to get your head around when you can apply it to certain medical conditions. The format of the assignment/exams is very similar to surgical nursing. 2 case studies of a long term and acute condition for the assignment and 2 exams: 1 written and 1 'triple jump'. For the written exam you choose 2 questions and have to discuss the physiology, diagnostic tests, medical treatment and nursing care for a patient with a given condition (or something to that effect). For the triple jump, you are given information about a patient (signalment, symptoms etc) and you then have to ask the examiner appropriate questions about the patient (they play the role of the vet) in order to determine what diagnostic procedures you will perform and what your nursing care will be. You also have a selection of equipment and materials to select from to help with your decision. You then go off and write a plan of how you will approach the nursing care of the patient.

Overall there is a lot to cover, but a lot of it is just building on what we do everyday in practice.

Hope that helps!
