I am currently volunteering at a zoo in Thailand. We have an incredible amount of autonomy and currently have full responsibility of 4 leopards (1:1:2), 6 macaques (5:1), 2 gibbons (1:1), 1 male timminks cat, 1 male phayre's langur, 2 binturong

Re: Exotic animal vet/vet nurses needed to help us!

Hi,

I work in wildlife and exotic rescue in Asia and have, in the past been in a similar situation you are in now, I very much appreciate the politics and logistical challenges your facing... Can you not contact Edwin at WFFT for technical advice from his vets? You might struggle to get NGOs involved with this private zoo..a common occurrence.

I'm happy to help where I can over email and outsource specific queries to my wildlife rescue vet contacts around SE Asia but fingers crossed you get someone in ASAP. I will say, even though it seems dire at the moment, don't rush to fill this position, wait until you are sure you have found someone with the right approach and communication skills to get through to the owners as this is by far the best outcome and having an inexperienced nurse go in and lecture them will do nothing to help.

Good Luck!

Re: Exotic animal vet/vet nurses needed to help us!

Hi Jo!

Thanks for your reply. It would definitely be beneficial to have experience with exotics however we have nothing at the moment so anyone who can help us we will give careful, serious consideration too.

At the moment we have a sick leopard (thiamine deficiency?/stomach abscess) several very sick rare breed macaws, a sickly langur (we have caught tourists feeding her everything from ice cream to dirty tissues) and an elephant with a bad foot. We are also fighting an outbreak of ringworm.

The owner here refuses to trust to local vets as we live in an agricultural area and all the vets here are used to treating only cows, goats and dogs. He says that in the past these vets have made bad decisions which have led to his animals dieing so now we are reduced to listening (and ignoring) his father who suggests only tylenol, decolgen and immodium. His reasoning is "They test on monkey now monkey take".

Working here will be a challenge but every day we make big differences to the lives of these animals.

Re: Exotic animal vet/vet nurses needed to help us!

Hi, are you specifically looking for applicants with qualifications or experience in exotics?
