Well it says in the book i may choose

"if you decide that weather conditions are too severe you may choose to either:

1) take the day(s) as annual leave; or

2) take the day(s) as authorised unpaid leave of absence

I will be querying it on monday but reading that it seems to me i was told wrongly by my pm when i phoned to say i wasn't able to get in

Hi Elerrina,

I think the answer to your query will really only be found by speaking to your HN or PM again. It may be, as Sal says, that the practice understanding and, therefore, operation of the rules is different to the way the words read to you. It may also be that you have a very valid point and you have been dictated to unfairly. Whichever / whatever, I think you really need to speak to them again and calmly, politely sort things out between you? I am not sure that anyone here can offer you any fool-proof advice that will give you power over your employer in this respect, if that is what you are asking?

Nevertheless I agree, based on what you have said, it sounds like you could have been given the choice of holiday or unpaid leave. On the other hand, the choice might not be within your say so (which is what I think Sal is saying).

Only two people are allowed off at a time in our practice. But its not the fact i had to take holiday it was that i was told it was in my employee handbook that i had to take holiday and when i queried it they said nope had to take holiday, and then when i check my book it says i can take it as holiday OR unpaid leave which contradicts what i was told

its up to the practice really - I know places I have worked management have insisted it should be taken as paid holiday EXCEPT where people have no holiday left for that year/period in which case it is taken as unpaid leave and I have to admit as the HN it was me who pushed for insistence on that being the case. My reasoning behind this was that I was already working with fewer nursing staff than was needed and covering holidays/time off was a nightmare for just basic holiday as I was rarely allowed a locum nurse, so for staff to be 'extending' their days off by electing to take unpaid leave made my job all the harder. Just wondered if this is what happens at your practice?

Yeah it was just I said on the phone to my PM that i thought we could take it as unpaid and she said no i had to take it as holiday, which according to my employee book isn't the case. Could they be awkward about it since it was last month and I've already been paid now? =/ I just feel it wasn't very fair to say i HAD to take it as holiday which wasn't true at all

when we've had snow days previously we have been given 3 options:

holiday/use lieu time
unpaid leave
pay the time back

I would just speak to your HN and see what they say.
