I have a diploma student using the Skillwise NPL who is coming up to her final placement period. We are a very quiet (clinically) mixed practice and we are struggling to get cases.
I wondered if you had a link to the rcvs guide to using simulations? I cant find anything anywhere and wondered if it would be useful.

Thanks

Hayley, diploma students can go to partner or known TPs to get relevant skills. As long as it is with your VNAC and they can have a witness they can accrue skills there. Usually it is required for smaller areas like endoscopy or ultrasound. It is the same as degree students who havent managed to get all their skills during theor placements and so apply to previous places where they feel they will get the experience.

Sorry for the delay in my reply!!

As a degree student I am lucky as I get to move around as I want and although I did my first two placements in general practice I've gone to referral for my third and I have managed to log so much more and gather alot of infomation for my patient care plans, perhaps the college would let your student do this for a few weeks?

Also for the care plans MAYBE they can be done via simulation as the actual tasks you would undertake in the care plan should be in her NPL anyway?

Just a couple of thoughts, not 100 percent but hopefully it helps

Re: Calling Clinical Coaches: Alternative assessment methods, help!

You are right - time at another placement with the appropriate case load is essential!
This is exactly my concern for her. I haven't signed her off as competent for anything she hasn't done, which is why I have avoided using alternative assessments so far.

We are an aTP, as Jane has cottoned on to, which is why I am a little bemused as to why the whole secondment idea isn't flying with the college.

Thanks for all the replies so far, I think I will speak with my IV on Monday about secondment again in case I'm not making it obvious enough that it has now become blatently essential.

Re: Calling Clinical Coaches: Alternative assessment methods, help!
You can't use professional discussions as it needs to practical skills that are logged.
I was observed by the assessor in both practices and the other nurses in the practices took pictures of me being involoved in the cases on my phone so that I could then include them in my case log. I posted the cases to each assessor who then posted them back once marked. Any questions to cover the knowledge and understanding bits of each case were marked by my own assessor who countersigned the case. My IV or VNAC had no issues with this.

Re: Calling Clinical Coaches: Alternative assessment methods, help!

I feel a few simulations are ok however they are no replacement for the real thing, if you are having to use alternative methods for that many things is your student going to be a competent nurse ?
Simulations are good - there is an RCVS guide to these. Its on my work computer. I'll dig it out and post it. There isnt a set limit to how many can be used. Overall QA are looking for evidence you have waited to see if cases appear. i.e. you dont assume you wont see it and set up a simulation too early. Therefore most people end up doing them in the month before exam entries. Is your student close enough to be considering OSCEs?

Witness statements are always good as it shows the student is working well with others and learning from more than one source. You can log the name of the witness.

Have they got access to any other placements that can give the cases needed? Esp ECC. It seems a bit mean that if you have such a low case load (are you an aTP) that they are expected to finish everything with you. Although ideally they have an end date, some take longer to get the cases, can you get in touch with a busier placement/contact college?

Re: Calling Clinical Coaches: Alternative assessment methods, help!

Get a practice pet for the urine sample and set up a simulation.
