Get the latest copy of the VNJ there's an article that in part addresses SVN's and 'oncall' can's and can'ts - -

VS Act and Schedule 3. The article reflects that certain duties should only be done by an SVN whilst under direct supervision. (Direct, continuous and personal supervision is considered as veterinary surgeon on the premises).

Essentially, the article quotes / paraphrases the VS Act / Schedule 3 in that it will be acceptable if a (student) nurse is attending practices alone to fill water bowls, walk animals, change bedding etc but not to administer medical treatment or carry out minor surgery without the direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon (who is on the premises).

VNJ, Vol 28, page 42-43

If u are a BVNA member then you could call Nicky Ackerley HR Support, who wrote the article - (01822 870270 or email Nicky@hrsupportconsultancy.co.uk)

PM me if you want more info.
