I'm having a bit of a dilemma, I'm pretty much head nurse, clinical coach and the only qualified in a very busy practice, we do a 1 in 3 weekend rota, and we are open Saturdays and Sundays, and we don't get a lieu day for working the weekend.

Re: Days in lieu?

If I remember correctly you're not allowed by aw to work more than 11 days in a row. (but don't pin me down on it )

If you're a BVNA member, phone the legal advice-line, they're brilliant!

And as previously said: Don't burn yourself out for the sake of your boss or colleagues.
If he is not willing to listen, I guess the only way for him to realise it's not right is for something to go wrong... or for people to walk away or worse, get ill and all he'll do is replace you with another mug (no offence! )

Good luck!

Re: Days in lieu?

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to have another look into my contract and if possible I might opt out :)

Re: Days in lieu?

Far too many nurses get taken advantage of, working many hours more than they should and many hours effectively without pay. So long as people keep putting up with it, it will keep happening.

Good on you for wanting to raise the subject. The BVNA helpline were a great help to me when I brought the topic up at work, they also have packs and information sheets you can give your boss.

Your employer can ask you to opt out of the 48 hour working week, but you have a legal right to refuse or cancel that opt out. Your employer can not ask you to opt out of minimum rest breaks though.

Good luck! I raised the subject at work and we are now WTR compliant.

Re: Days in lieu?

I've been that person who puts the staff and the practice before yourself. I speak from experience that you'll burn out. Do what you can and let it be the boss who worries about the supervising of the staff at weekends. Is he the only Vet? Get another to help back you up if you can.

Re: Days in lieu?

I'd definitely check out the working time directives to ensure that you are within those and also check your contract of employment to ensure that you have not opted out. Even if you have opted out you can (if I remember correctly) give 3 months notice and cancel that agreement. As an employer I am always grateful for nurses that are as conscientious as you sound, but for your sanity book the time off and leave the worrying to your boss. You never know he may appreciate how much you actually do for him when
you are not there. Good luck and if you want to chat you can always pm me. Take a look at the working time directive regulations and that should give you some advice

good luck, personally I think your boss is breaking the law
