However I heard today that another practice's CC has just opened everything using the quick start way for her students

Re: Quick start on NPL

I think it can be a good idea, especially with all the kennel and environement preparation. My student has been in practice for 2 years, she does night duties and manages kennels by herself. I know she understands how to prepare an environment for a seizuring dog or a eldery hyperthyroid cat. I don't need to demonstrate it to her, I know she knows it, therefore I will quick start that skill.

I think it depends on the clinical coach and the student, and what they do on a daily basis, but at the end of the day its up to the clinical coach to agree to competency.

I will normally quiz my student or ask her to show me what shes claimed before I will sign her as competent., even if I've quick started the NPL.

Re: Quick start on NPL

I'm a student and I think it is good for some tasks that you are competent in and it saves time, but I do like to log cases in my demonstrations (or the cc logs them) just as extra evidence so that i have a case to back up my demo :)

Re: Quick start on NPL

it only appeared for my students this week and had to figure it out myself, its perfect for my students as they have al been in practice 3-6 years

Re: Quick start on NPL

BF, that is the right idea.

The QS is to save cases demonstrating, when the student could use them for evidence.

There has always been an issue with CCs opening alot at once. The RCVS want tosee measured progress, i.e. you can't demo and demo back 3 untis in 1 day!

Re: Quick start on NPL

It does say on bumph that you have to be certain that the SVN is ready for this as it can't be undone or deleted. I've started using it for my 1st year student, for some of the easier 2nd year tasks which I know she's been doing since day 1 of placement - such as surgical prep, cleaning the theatre. I've only opened them once she's finished other earlier units, such as the infection control one in VN5 - that one almost proves that she can clean a theatre by itself, so no real need to demo it all.

Overall I think its a great idea but can see how it could be abused by lazy CCs!!
